with flat seas predicted, the plan was to mothership four kayaks from monterey to point sur, 25 miles away.

ok, two to starboard.

lots of gear. the weight limitation to my boat was of concern, so i ended up running with 300 pounds less fuel than i normally would to make up for the extra weight of the kayaks.

ready to roll, pending inspection and approval by allen.

1_27_05_09_10_37_47_0.jpeg

well, almost. needs a little more adjusting.

1_27_05_09_10_37_49_1.jpeg

ok, now we're ready!

1_27_05_09_10_37_54_3.jpeg

left to right, we have phil #1, phil #2 and tall paul. looks like someone is excited!

1_27_05_09_10_43_25_0.jpeg

ok, this is not good. we have a northwest swell, a southerly wind and a southerly wind wave.

1_27_05_09_10_43_28_1.jpeg

phil #1 is getting queezy. he will continue to barf all day, but will never give up. i vaguely recall a saying about "mad dogs and englishmen."

1_27_05_09_10_43_30_2.jpeg

things were rough around the point lobos, but calmed down considerably above point sur. time to launch the boats.

1_27_05_09_10_43_33_3.jpeg

phil #2 was first in the water.

1_27_05_09_10_50_42_0.jpeg

1_27_05_09_10_55_12_0.jpeg

phil #1 followed.

1_27_05_09_10_55_15_1.jpeg

1_27_05_09_10_55_17_2.jpeg

and finally, scallen!

1_27_05_09_10_55_20_3.jpeg

1_27_05_09_11_20_35_1.jpeg

1_27_05_09_11_00_20_3.jpeg

then we heard the big news! scallen stuck a hog of a halibut. 42 inches and 31 pounds!!!!! cold, wet and exhausted, the old man was done for the day!

1_27_05_09_11_00_23_4.jpeg

1_27_05_09_11_20_32_0.jpeg

phil #1 only kept three fish, but what a set!

1_27_05_09_11_04_49_0.jpeg

tall paul's take was impressive!

everything stowed and on the road.

1_27_05_09_11_09_27_2.jpeg

a building northwest swell, south winds and a windwave from the south. a much easier run home than in the morning.

sean and i did. we stayed out in deep water. the four kayakers were able to get into the kelp, around the wash rocks, and fish areas that boats will not dare enter. there is absolutely no beach access for them. basically, no one has ever fished these areas before, and they are only 25 miles away from the boat launch in monterey, california!!!!!!!!!!!!!
