or it could just be a clogged up tell tale outlet, unfold a paper clip and stick it up the oulet while the engine is running.

on the motor there is an inline fuse holder check that. sometimes they blow this will cut power to motor. it is probably on the stbd side of motor under the plastic cover where the solenoids are.

There are inspection plates that you can remove and should be able to get to them. They are the round plates that pop out with a flathead screwdriver.

It is probably the gearcase. Sounds like you had alot of metal in it. And the nosie you heard was the bearings/gears making noise, probably a slight growl.
