    2001 250 HP 2 strokes versus 2014 300 HP 4 strokes

You wouldn't want to buy them JUST for the fuel/oil savings. You would NEVER recoup the initial investment. $15,600 buys you A LOT of fuel and oil. The savings in fuel/oil should be looked at as a "bonus" of getting 4-strokes - or, at the very least, one of the factors. But to make that the...

    Time for a new trailer

Mike, has NJ law changed recently about "all axles requiring brakes"? Maybe I've been misinformed all these years? But I've seen a lot of dual axle trailers with NJ plates and a very good percentage of them had brakes only on one axle... so it seemed to backup what I thought was the NJ law of...

    2 stroke oil

I actually don't mind paying a little more (within reason) at local stores as compared to the big chain stores. The advice and customer service I can get from talking to a knowledgable person is well worth it. I also know that it's often hard for them to compete since they don't sell the...

    228 'battery isolator switch'?

Nothing wrong with that, either! I used that method for a long, long time. On odd-numbered days I used Batt #1, even-numbered-days was Batt #2. I run two starting batteries on this boat since I don't use a whole lot of battery-powered stuff when the engine is off. On other boats, where I had...

    228 'battery isolator switch'?

I had (have) that aux charge wire on my engine. It's a simple setup. I actually thought it was standard - but I could be wrong. However, I recently disconnected it as there is a possibility that it's causing an intermittent running issue. Apparently, the aux wire is known to fail internally...

    Time for a new trailer

Have you thought about adding brakes to that second axle? I've trailered similar boats both ways and it does make a difference. When it comes to braking, more is definitely better! On another note about this topic... It's interesting how our viewpoints sometimes change based on what we're...

    2 stroke oil

From a purely "protective" standpoint, any TCW3 is going to get the job done. The difference comes about, often, in the amount of smoke produced and how clean the oil burns internally... possibly leading to fouling plugs or O2 sensor. Personally, I think the Yamaha stuff smokes too much...

    cost for waxing

Mike, did you mean to quote me or Old Man Goose? ;) Yes, I've done it - hence the reason I thought that price was fair. Done my own boats... friends/family... customers. Like you, too many times to remember. I'm not familiar with the Cyclo - but I use the type of buffer that looks like a...

    Help with fuel consumption please

HA! I looked right past the 1997 and only saw the "F". In that case, as noted, 1mpg-ish is about right.

Scuppers Below the Waterline and No Water in Bilge

First, I would unplug those scuppers immediately - especially since it's in a slip. Where will rain go? Get two or three people to stand on/at the transom and observe for the bilge for a minute - does water start to show up? Have you done any mods like adding an engine bracket? How does the...

OK, then that sounds fair. To do it right, it does take some time. There's a lot of angles and things to go around, too.

    Help with fuel consumption please

Joe, I think you may not be remembering correctly what your F250 gave you. I have a 2-stroke 250 on my Offshore. I consistently get 11-13 gph when running in the 25 to 30- mph range (about 21 to 26 knots). Not accounting for current, but to get a pretty good rough average and estimating on...

    Transom Bang Plate - '01 180

If there's nothing wrong with the existing one (which is what it sounds like you are saying), why replace it? Otherwise, yes, what your dealer is saying is typical and pretty straight forward. There's also lot's of info about this (use search function) - in case you wanted to read more about it.

Replacing fuel tank on 1993 208 Adventurer

Just throwing this out for "food for thought" for you. So far (knocking on wood right now), my tank is doing OK. I have a single, 92g tank. But, it's way bigger than I need. If/when it comes time to replace it, I'm thinking of going with a smaller - maybe 60g-ish PLASTIC tank. No more...

bad bow steer after motor upgrade

I'm wondering if the term "bow steer" might be being used incorrectly? Bow steer happens when too much of the hull is in the water at planing speeds. Often, we can purposefully cause this to happen by trimming down fully. When you are having the issue, where is the water spray leaving the...

Are they just putting a quick coat of wax on there, or are they first buffing it?

    Adding a crows nest?

To figure out the high center of gravity and tippiness issue... you might want to throw a couple sheets of 3/4" plywood up there (to help simulate weight of a solid top), along with some extra weight for good measure. Tie it down securely using holes in the plywood in key areas - maybe even use...

    Replacement cuddy walls

You can find 24"x54" HDPE (it doesn't need to be the "Starboard" brand) easily enough. Is that wide enough? Taco Metals is a big supplier of this stuff, too. Otherwise, you might need to go to a local marine store to order something larger. But, if it's not falling apart, keep it simple and...

    Water in fuel

At only 13 years old, I'd be surprised if it was corroded. But, the only way to tell if the tank is corroded is to physically inspect it and possibly pressure test it.
