Hello, I'm looking at a 1980 241 weekender. It has the 350 Merc, 260 hsp.
Is this enough power for this size boat? What speeds could I expect.

Thanks,

Jeff

It should be Ok at 260hp....30-35 on the speed maybe...not sure if you'll hit 40 with that package...if the motor is original, it may be a bit tired by now...

Just Right!

JFGLN, Hello, the little lady definitely wont be a speed demon, but like Richie says 30-35 no problem. She will give you fairly good range and good fuel economy. 8)

JFGLN,

in all honesty, you can pretty much bank on any boat in that vintage era will have transom and stringer issues unless you find one that was used by an old lady on Sundays

Concur any boat of this vintage will have some rot. However, the extent of rot is the issue. If you get the boat for the right price the transom can be repaired and be good as new without breaking the bank. Or - go out and enjoy it now and fix it later. How do you know the transom is rotted - i.e. drilled holes? Do you know how much is rotted - i.e. good for another couple seasons before you (absolutely) need to replace?

Bad news, the wood in the transom is totally rotten. The search for a boat continues......

Don't know what extent you want to make it a project, but you might want to make a low ball offer. I have a 80' 241 Weekender with the same problem (with an I/O also).

I have a guy redoing the entire stern and buffing out the hull for $3,500.00. Replacing the wood with glass. This guy is one of the best on the Chesapeake with glass work and according to him, it'll last forever. The downtime for the glasswork is only a couple of weeks.

Not a bad deal for a tank of a hull. Especially when I bought the boat from a guy who had no idea what he had. Sold it with a solid motor and trailer for $100.00..

FYI....

I have an '84 Offshore w/ 350 w/ Vortec heads.....s/b about 300+HP.
I have a 1.5:1 Alpha drive turning a 17" prop.

I can cruise at 30MPH @ 3600 RPM.......wot is 4600RPM at ~38MPH.

Is he not using any type of core at all? Just 1.5 to 2 inches of solid glass?

He's getting started in a couple of weeks, I'll ask and post back. My understanding is he's pulling all the wood; back then it was 2 layers of 5/8 MP, and replacing it with either mat and glass or a glass "plywood". He explained it all, but it's been a couple of months.
