I just purchased my first grady, long overdue. I was looking for some feedback on issues tht there may be conserning the gas tank and structure of the boat. Any feedback is greatly appreaciated. Also is there a gas main shut off valve anywhare on the boat ? Ive looked everywhare and cannot locate it.. I,m not worried about the engine it's a new 150 v6 yam. any feedback on the engine would help also.. Thanks ..Jmbadge

Not sure if they changed to fuel take cover on the deck in 98 , but there is a 12in round deck plate on mine, remove it, the valve is on top of the fuel tank under the 12in cover.

if not done, Get your transon checked, Remove the fuel tank access panel and inspect the tank, lines ect replace thru hulls with ss type if not done already.

if fuel filler, vent and feed lines are original , replace them with new ethenol rest fire safe lines. its a rough job but you wont be sorry, For safety sake anyway.

Check all the under dash electrical line and fuses for corrision.
Easier to see if you remove the capreted panels from inside the cabin right behind the helm.

Probably a good thing to think about doing a makeover of the inst panel and switches.

If your not sure, find a surveyor and have it checked by a pro. It will be money well spent.

I am sure you will get allot of input from the other members as well, welcome to the GW family!
Enjoy you boat! and congrats.

I changed out the fuel, vent, fill and supply hoses last year on my boat.

here is the original fuel fill from my 1989 Overnighter, after I split it for inspection

1989 overnighter

Thanks for the reply, all good stuff. I purchased the boat at an awsome price I am somewhat knowlegable of the issues that may come up. I think the main consirn would be the transome and gas tank. the transome looks fine with no cracks or anything that would indicate weekness. there are a couple of dings on the transome topside, that can be fixed . there are no week spots in the floor only when you step across the acess panels.. hopefully it will offer years of use.. Does anyone know whare i could purchase the stern acess panel this seems to have some cracks around the edges and will need to be replaced.. More input,s would be great... Thanks Jmbadge..

That trim on the transom was meant to cover/hide the joint where the hull seams come together. Major source of water intrusion in the transom.

If you find yourself at a point when there is no engine on the boat, loose this trim, examine the transom closely for any distortion or cracks, then if transom is ok glass over the whole thing.

I had one

From 1994 till 2006. Loved the boat. I had a 200 hp yamaha and it was also a 1989. No problems with either. My trailer was a 1994 EZ Loader again no issues if you do the basic maintanice. Enjoy
