The small oil tank under the cowling of my port engine will drip oil from under the small black cap at the top of the tank. This only happens when the engine is tilted all the way up. My starboard engine does not do this at all. It leaks enough to make a sticky mess on the transom. The port oil tank actually looks too full in comparison with the starboard one. Thoughts on this?

Never occurred with mine, there is a line on the tank I believe indicates the upper range of the auto fill circuit, as well as lower range.
The auto fill may be not operating properly.

I'll check the service manual when I get home from work.

It is a common problem....
the good news is there is a 50 cent fix....

Put a zip tie on it and pull it tight....

Problem solved.

Finatic is right on about the wire tie.

Also, I don't know this for a fact, but I've heard the trim sending unit prevents oil from being pumped to the motor tank, (from the remote tank). When the motor is trimmed all the way up, the angle of the motor tank will have a false low oil level. If the trim sending unit is stuck in a down position, it will allow the pump to "overfill" the motor tank.

Can anyone else verify this?

If it is true, it might explain why you have a higher oil level on that engine.

I think the ignition key has to be in the "on" position for the pump to operate too.

Per manual, the tank has two level markings on it, oil level should stay between both levels automatically, if it is going out of range get it checked out and corrected.

Is is too funny, I have been having the same problem with the same engine on the port side and it was driving me nuts, I was just on my boat today and the same thing, I was just about to call the guy who works on my engines. This must be the problem I am having, its not a lot of oil and mine only drips when the engine is up. What do you put the zip tie on? The cap UNDER the cowling?

Under the cowling is an oil resevoir with a black cap with a couple of wires coming out.... you will see residual oil on the outside of the resevoir....
This cap is what gets the zip tie....
