looking at buying my first grady. Its a 24 explorer 1993. Ive read so many things about rotting transoms. Is it really that big of an issue? Boat is extremly clean and well kept. Anything specifically I should look for?

I redid the transom in my Seafarer. Are you planning to do yourself or hire out? My father and I cut out the old transom and installed a new one and made the cutout transom into a full height. I also added a bracket.
I had a couple thousand in supplies (coosa board, epoxy - west system, 1708 and assorted fiberglass, fairing compound, etc.).
If you are somewhat handy, it's not a bad project. The worst...for me...is grinding the fiberglass. I'd highly encourage a Rockwell vibratory tool for making quick and precise cuts. I dont think the transom is rotten now. I just wanted to know if it was that common or if it has been blown out of proportion on the web.

with any wood core boat and especially one that is 26 years old, best to get a good survey done. you want a solid assessment so you know what you are getting into. everything can be corrected, just comes down to how much to do and at what cost. I don't think GWs are any worse than other manufacturers. just know what you are buying is my advice.
Ahhh...ok. So, is the issue of wet transoms one that is significant? I would venture a guess that there are a lot of boats out there with wet transoms...just puttering along with no apparent issues. The previous owner of my boat had no idea the transom was wet and rotting. And, without a moisture meter, it was tough to tell. I tapped...and then took off the cap and dug a little. What I thought was a minor issue was significant. Now....it probably would have worked fine for the previous owner. I wanted to put new power on it and I wanted it good.
