272 Speed/Bottom Paint

I am looking at a 2000 272 Sailfish with 200 HPDIs. It has had a few coats of bottom paint on it. I was told one way to tell how "clean" the hull is is to run it a a given RPM (3500) and compare its' speed to that of another boat the same model and motors. So my question is does anyone know how fast a 272 runs at certain rpms with HPDIs? Also, is there a good rule of thumb for bottom paint inspection?

There's too many differnt variables to do it that way. If the bottom looks smooth, it's OK. When you have multile levels of paint, think about stripping it all.

He is correct. There is no way that could be an accurate test. If it looks smooth it will run smooth, If it looks like crap, your performance will be affected

For what it is worth I have a 2000 272 powered by twin 200 HPDI's. The bottom is lightly sanded and repainted every season with ablative paint. At 4,000 rpm's she will run around 32mph loaded with fuel and water. At WOT she runs 5,500 rpm's and 41 to 42 MPH. Those numbers have been constant for the past 10 seasons I owned the boat.

I have a 1998 272. Ran it for 2 years from trailer. Bottom painted last November with ablative. I haven't noticed a performance change at my mid range cruise with 225 Yams. Top end may be another story but I don't run it hard. Stay 3400-3800.
A friend just bought a 282 with 200 HPDIs. Claims 15 gph at 31 mph. I get 21.5 gph at 31 mph. Big difference.

Thanks for the answers guys. Hopefully when I inspect the bottom it will not look too bad. Ahill, are you running HPDIs or OX66s? That may also account for the fuel mileage difference.
