what boat competes with the 336 canyon?

it appears to be a slower, more comfortable version of the fast tournament CC fishing boats (like yellowfin, contender, regulator, etc) - it seems to be one of those, except, wider, slower, less spartan - but fully equipped to fish (and not much compromise there)

what other boats are like that? - slighter deadrise (GW has 19 degrees), beamy, good compromise b/t fishability/running fast and comfortable daytripping/snorkling/kids, in a CC layout?

thanks!

Complicated question. I guess it depends what you want to use the boat for and what trade off's you can live with (assuming no boat is absolutley perfect.

I had a 29 Southport and moved to a 336 Canyon. I looked at many boats before the move and seriously considered YF, Sea Vee, Bahama and GW 366 (but I didnt want to go to triple outboards so that kept me in the 34' range). I was also very intereseted in the Southport 33 but production kept getting stalled (it is avilalable now) In my case, from the length to beam experience with Southport, I recognized the advantages of the length to beam ration (29' x 10' and deadrise) so the 336 won out there (although the Bahama has a great ratio) I use the boat inshore and out to the NE canyons in summer and fall so stability at drift and weight/ride in open ocean were big factors, our weather changes quickly iin NJ//NY- in reality, it is not very often that you can go 40,50,60 mph offshore for 2-3 hours without beating yourself and the boat to death. I was willing to sacrifice some fuel economy and speed for the beam and weight. I found the fit/finish/layout of the GW to be great- in order, i think Sea Vee, Southport, Bahama all have great fit/finish and then YF for fit finish and layout. It is also hard to find the creature comforts on a 336 in other mid size CC's (genset, freezer box, insulated boxes, all boxes drian overboard, and the well thought out/functional layout - these were all important to me but may not be important to you)

I have to admit, I was not big GW fan ,prior to this GW purchase (I thought the owners were more of a cult) but my first offshore in the 336 went sour- seas went to true 7-8' with winds off starboard bow and 15-20+ knot winds on our nose for 70 mile ride home - I was really impressed- maybe the other boats would have done as well (but I dont think so) the weight, beam and hull handled the ride extremely well..

I think you cannot go wrong with 336, Southport, Sea Vee, Bahama, YF- they all appear to be good boats- I was very impressed with my Southport as is all owners and the bahama is a beautiful, well laid out boat (but they donrt have gensets, freezerboxes, etc)I think it depends how you use the boat (cruise vs.fish) where you boat (inshore vs canyons) and what features are important to you. I can tell you, I am extremley impressed with the 336 as is everyone that rides on it. if you want moe info, I can send cell number and we can talk.

One additional comment, you mention having kids (depending on their age) - the shower, hot water, AC, and power to run personal electronics etc and bunk inside a 336 or 366 would come in handy for when kids get bored and give them a hang out (much like you get with an express boat!

thanks BeachBum - this is really helpful and just what i am looking for - i am leaning toward the GW for just the reasons you state:

1. you sacrifice some speed and fuel efficienty; but get
2. good ride in seas
3. not (as) tippy when drifting and at anchor
4. best of both worlds for fishing and recreational (cruising around, hitting a sandbar to snorkel, etc)
5. lots of creature comforts

i have yet to find a downside other than 1...but is that a downside if it gets you many of the other features? - i don't think so - looking forward to pulling the trigger and joining the family in the not too distant future

few other questions:

a. how hard is it to single hand the boat?
b. where does the diesel exhaust to (assume off the back?)
c. how loud is the genny
d. is the micro cabin really big enoug for any one to hang out in ?
e. can 1 (2?) adult(s) sleep in the berth?
f. any options you didn't get that you wished you had and vice versa?

thanks!!

you could sleep 2 but it would be "cozy"- what also works is, you can put a bean bag on the console floor or put one of the cushions from the front seat or air mattress on console floor- also, if weather is good, put the insert between the two bow seats (turns it into a full platform in the bow) w/.cushion and sleep outside. for us, most times, we are sleeping in bean bags on the deck and fishing.

call me with questions (two zero one) two four eight- three nine nine three name is Tony

i bought the boat "used " 200hrs- so i am not sure what options are not in it but I cannot think of any. I have microwave, shower, hot H2O, AC/Heat, bow thruster, shower in cabin, two hand showers (one near freezer box one near cutting board/seating. has raw wash down in rear and in front seat
live well (insulated) starboard and ice chest port side (behind/underneath seat/seat rocket launcher- so i would say it is LOADED
the seats are super comfortable. i also added underwater lights- if you are adding them, call me fir suggested layout- its a bit tricky

unless you want to add them yourself, I would get a few rod holders along the gunwale - maybe one mid ship and two forward of that on each gunwale. my boat has three rod holders each side gunwale near rear but I am adding some going forward.

I operate it alone- the bow thruster helps but is a nice to have not need to have. if you can swing the 366- you get a lot more cabin but pricey and fuel consumption is below .9 at best 1 gal/mile from what I saw in my test ride. I can get 1.1-1.3 at cruise and usually avg about 1 gal/mi when I push it to 3/4 throttle.

the genset is very quiet- the exhaust is port side rear- so i drift with it downwind.
The boat is really well laid out, easy to work on ands easy to get to the systems or run new wires/hoses. I don't think you will be dissapointed.

Not sure how close you are to buying but a 2010 with 300 hrs just listed on thehulltruth.com sounds like it has all the stuff!
Also saw a few on yachtworld

looks nice

Admiral says must rent at least 10 times - arbitrary number to show we will really use a boat and that the kids won't get bored after a couple of times

smart Admiral...

by the way, saw my first 336 in person - one '15 left at the dealer (no...not for me...not buying new) - but the new ones can now come painted or gel coated - this one was a blue-grey gel coat - really pretty - as most of you know more than i, it is a massive 33 - when i look at other boats in that size, like a contender, they are skinny and much lighter built

the fit and finish was nice...lots of smart uses of space - the console is massive

really sweet with twin 350's
