I took on a refinishing project this year for my own boat. I was having a terrible time finding anyone to do the work so I started with the glass work and eventually the paint work.
I have never really liked to paint and never took the time to learn. I watched a few YouTube video's by Frankie Bushong and decided to give it a try. How hard can it be? Frankie was using the 3M PPS spray gun. He was getting great results and it looked easy enough.
One of the great features of this system is it uses disposable paint cups. They are available in several sizes. The lid is disposable too. The lid has an integrated paint filter so no paint straining is necessary. When you are finished you pop the cup and lid off and throw it out. The disposable spray heads are available in different sizes. They can be cleaned and re-used. When it comes time to clean up you don't have a large container to clean - throw it out. Pour solvent in the spray head and spray it out or pop it off and wipe the tip. All the disposables are inexpensive. And a kit with the spray gun and starter tips is under $300.
The biggest problem I had was having enough "air". It's amazing how much air SCFM you need to power the spray gun. Not pressure just volume. You need at least 5HP dual stage compressor and at least 13 SCFM.
I did the hardtop, aluminum tower, hull and console bubble. Gunnels and cockpit are 2023 project. AwlCraft 2000 paint. The results were awesome! The beauty of the AwlCraft 2000 is that it a "repairable" paint. Runs and defects can be sanded out. Repainting areas, wet sanding and buffing can be done as well. This thread documents the work done so far.
