Hi everyone. I have a 85 overnighter with a 1995 Johnson 175 ocean runner. The motor stalls when I throw it in reverse and in drive it starts to bog down until it finally stalls. The more I let it idle the better I am and eventually I can ease into the throttle and go full throttle and I’m good to go. Im thinking a carb rebuild? What do you all think?

the problem with those motors is the carbs warp , they are made of plastic and warp over time . they warp where the bowls are and where the bolt to the throttle body's . they suck air and stall . finding new ones is tough . might be time to repower . too bad cause they otherwise were very long lasting motors

I've had good luck with 2 smokers. Here's what I'd do. Loose order. I work on my own stuff so I tend to spend more time troubleshooting/cleaning before throwing parts at it.

With the motor warmed up set the idle somewhere close to 900 RPM in the driveway on muffs. It will idle 150-200 RPM lower in the water, looking for about 750. Can set in the water too.

Spark test all cylinders to make sure they are firing.

(Verify no change before moving forward)

Compression check first to make sure its worth spending money on.

Then carb kits, fuel pump rebuild kits, and all new fuel lines. Inspect the bleed hoses also. You may not even needs the kits, just be careful with the gaskets, and be sure to set the floats right. Good point above on the crappy plastic bowls. Seal-All is a great band aid for that.

Often times carbs get blamed for electrical issues. That doesn't sound like the issue here to me, but its difficult to say without having hands on. Just be mindful of that. Easy to go down the wrong rabbit hole.

on the subject of warped carb bowls; take the cowling off and then squeeze the primer bulb until firm. Inspect each carb bowl for drips and leaks. If nothing is found, ensure primer bulb is still firm, if not, the fuel is going somewhere else (a leak fuel pump diaphragm or needle/seat)

Thanks everyone. It ended up that it was water in the fuel. Replaced all the filters and runs much better. Still one problem, its stalling in reverse. Any ideas?
