AIS Capable VHF and Garmin 7610vsx

I am looking to buy a new VHF with AIS technology. Probably something like a Standard Horizon GX2200. Before doing so I want to be able I can output the AIS information to my Garmin 7610vsx. Both the radio and plotter have NMEA 0183 inputs and outputs. Can anyone confirm that these will do what I am looking for? I believe they will but, want to be sure.

Why not just get the Garmin AIS black box receiver? It will interface perfectly with your plotter and will be it's own independent unit (not inside your VHF).

Also consider if you want to Send as well as Receive AIS signals. If you want an AIS Transponder, now's the time to make that decision and get the AIS Transponder from Garmin. You will however need a separate antenna for the AIS transponder. Good luck in what ever you decide. I am a big fan of the AIS.

I was in the market for a hailer and this unit has it. The AIS and VHF was just a bonus. I'd like to take advantage of the AIS receiver. Turns out the 2100b isn't made any longer. I will be getting the 2200.

I've got the Lowrance Link 8. Also has the AIS receiver built in and outputs AIS info to a plotter/GPS.

Biggest advantage of the Link 8 and it's sister the Simrad RS35 is that they are N2K radios whereas the S/H 2200 is 0183. If you already have an N2K backbone, then the Link 8 will be plug and play.

Street price of the Link 8 is under $225 to your door. If you want the RS35 which is remote handset compatible, it's $100 more or so.

Don't skimp on your antenna, regardless of which one you select.

Nice units. My Garmin accepts either 0183 or N2K so, it's no big deal for me. Again I was originally in the market for a hailer... It just progressed into the other options.

We just hooked up the Standard Horizon 2200 up to our 7610. Everything worked fine. Need to make sure to use the input wires to the 0183 port and turn the baud rate up to high speed on both the radio and the Garmin unit.
