I have two yamaha gauges - mounted on the right side is the tach, gauge on the left shows speed, fuel level, etc. This one has 4 dummy indicators, and I must be dummer than they were intended for. From right to left on bottom of gauge: far right is a green circle which I believe indicates a good level of oil; next one over on the left is a yellopw circle which I take to mean a low level of oil; next one on the left is an old fashion oil can in red, which I take to mean indicates a dangerously low level of oil; and the one farthest to the left looks like a thermometer - which I take to mean is an engine temperature indicator. I run a 1998 OX66 250HP.

An alarm went over recently, rpms dropped and an arrow was flashing over the thermometer symbol. Tilted engine, cleaned weed from intake, let it rest and all was well.

Yesterday same thing, but there was no weed and I couldnt get the alarm to go off, even after a few minute rest. I limped to my destination, unloaded gear and gave it another rest. Also checked the reserve oil tank and it was low - probably less than a half gallon so I filled it up. Pulled cover and checked oil reservoir, but it was full.

I couldnt sit at the dock any longer so I turned her on and limped away with the alarm. Within 2 minutes it went off, gauge went back to normal (arrow pointing at green circle).

Now I'm second guessing myself - do the dummy signals mean what I think they do? Was she overheating or asking for oil?

The "piss" flow is strong and was each and every time the alarm rang.

Can anyone tell me where the thermostats are located? They were replaced last spring, maybe overdue.

Any info please...

Was the arrow indicating overheat the second time?

The t-stats are under the plates with a bulge above the top spark plugs (one on each side). Was the poppet changed the last time? They'll cause overheat problems too.

Grog - since you're being so helpful maybe you can answer this - the site you sent me to lists 4 different 250hp motors in my model year 1998:

L250 TSRW
L250 TURW
S250 TURW
S250 TXRW

I run the OX 66....how do I determine which of the 4 to choose?

The numbers are by the serial # on the motor bracket.
