I am looking at a potential trade-up from a 2004 Gulfstream with F225 to a 2006 Sailfish with twin F225.

The cockpit area square footage is not that much bigger. Big plus up in the cabin with the stand up head, shore power etc.

I am doing a sea trial next weekend due to the lousy conditions forecast for this weekend. Does anyone have insight into the difference in ride and fuel economy going from the Gulfstream to the Sailfish. Wondering if I'm crazy doing a 70K upgrade.

Thanks in advance

The Sailfish is WAY more boat. Myself and several close friends fish 60nm offshore all the time in a 272/282. As always you want to pick your days or the ride will be LOOOONG.

We caught some nice tuna, wahoo, mahi in my past 1997 272.

Legend; I recently upgraded from my 2002 Gulfstream to my 2002 Sailfish. As mega stated, its WAY WAY more boat. The cockpit feels bigger and there will be NO question as you ride that you ARE in a different size class. I had over 1000 hours in my Gulfstream, most of them in the NE Canyons from Ocean City (60 to 70) miles.

The ride is better. I have twin 225 4-strokes and the power is night and day. As for fuel flow, the jury is out. I don;t expect to save a bunch of $$$ on gas thats for sure. However the motors are working less. I am cruising along at about 28 to 30 Ktz turning about 35 to 3800 RPM. I ran my single 225 at 4800 rpm most of the time running 26kts, roughly.

Hope that helps, be happy to address any further questions...

I’ve got a ’97 GS but fished a friends ’97 Sailfish the other day for the third time. Lots of differences between the two boats, but I think the biggest difference between the two boats you’ve outlined is that the Gulfstream only has a 225 on her. My friends boat has twin 200 Yamaha’s and just screeams out of the hole and plows through almost anything. Handles beautifly on plain and no doubt the GS would perform better with twins, as has been discussed here previously.
