I was wondering about GWs strategy about dropping the Sailfish and intoducing the the Chesapeake. Not sure if it was a great move particularly in ths economic climate.

What do you think the top 3 selling GW models are? I would bet the Sailfish was one of them and I will also bet the Chesapeake does not come close to closing that void with the price tag?

My guess

Seafarer #1
Gulfstream #2
Sailfish #3

I don't have any info on the three best sellers.

A comment regarding the Sailfish vs. Chesapeake discussion.

The Sailfish was having difficulty competing against several other boats in the 29-foot range that offered generators as an option. No way for GW to get one into a Sailfish.

The 290 is a bigger boat than the 282. While a foot of length and five inches of beam may not sound like much, the molded depth of the 290 hull is also greater. As they told us during a factory tour last May, you could drop a Sailfish hull inside the 290 hull, and then put the top on.

Cathy and I have always wanted a Marlin, but it hasn't fit into the budget. We can't get a Marlin into our slip at the condo, but a 290 would fit just fine. (We have a firm rule about not sticking out, and our slip is 35-feet long). I won't "upgrade" from our 270 to another boat without a generator, so perhaps a 290 is in our future..

prices going up

There is a lot of competition in the 28 to 30 foot market. Raising the price point will definetly be a factor for most buyers, especially with trade-ins at depressed levels and banks fine tuning their offers. just my 2 cents

Top 4 are 20 W/A(adventure/overnighter) 22 Seafarer, 23 Gulfstream, and Sailfish. Not sure of the order, but for a while the 22 seafarer was top with sailfish a close second, then the 20 and 23 close behind. The 23 gulfstream has gained a lot of popularity in recent years, earlier in its existence it was not as popular as it is now so it is catching up, but has not always been as popular as it is now. the sailfish always had a solid following and very good sales, too bad they stopped it and replaced it with the chesapeake, not sure why the nead for a name change, it is too similar in deisgn even though it is a bigger boat. I wish they would have did more to change the boat, I think they were too conservative in the new layout, it is a nice boat but for the price the only real benefit is the gen and if you really need it the thruster...which is designed and installed 100% wrong. That design itself would lead me to never buy one knowing the proper way...and then how they did it. The Sefarer has had a solid following for years and seems to be a very nice layout for a boat its size and has pleased owners for years, it has a good layout and can function as a fishermen as well as a family boat. The 20 has had a solid following as well, but seems to be tapering off a little due to cost and that the 22 offers much more boat for not a huge price jump. when the 20 was cheaper, it was one of the most popular introduction boats for many buyers. I'm sure most who ahve owned a few Grady's started with either a 20 or 22 and moved up from there. The walkthroughsd will gain popularity over the years, but until recently never had a big enough following to put them near the top, but as the needs of boatser change and new developments in boat design occur, that type of a "sport utility" boat will for sure gain popularity as it already has and will begin to make its claim towards the top of the list.

There is only so much room in a 28-30 foot boat. The more things you try to make it do the worse it is at doing those things. If you want the generator (built in) get a Marlin or Express or larger. The Honda 2000 is also a pretty good option for those without the generator (and a lot easier to get to too).

I will ask the Grady rep at the boat show tomorrow....but I believe the 208 Adventurer is the best selling model in the lineup.

I agree with Grog - it is a lot more palatable to spend a couple of grand on a honda than 22 grand generator option on the Chesapeake

Reason for dropping the sailfish

I believe the reason for dropping the popular "Sailfish" name is because of the new boat manufacturer "Sailfish Boats". I guess Grady didn't trademark the name and they are (or were in this economy) growing.

This one of the beefs I have with GW and many other current manufacturers. The Sailfish shouldn't try to compete in th 28' to 30' market. It's still only a 25' boat.... Sure the hull length might be 28 now, but it has no more usable space than my 25' Sailfish.
