My FP 4200 diesel generator cut off the other day after running all day. The fuel pump was original 2006 so I replaced it with a Facet pump (way way smaller than the original Walbro pump). I also changed the racor fuel and water separator filter which did have a little slime in it.

Started generator and ran for 30 seconds before shutting down. I believe I need to bleed the fuel system but wasn’t 100% sure how even after talking to FP service team. I disconnect the #5 wire and turned on system and pump ran but didn’t fill bowl up. I must be missing something here. Is there a trick to priming the system?

I can get it to start and it runs for 30 seconds before shutting down. Also changed oil and all was clear there.

appreciate any tips.

I looked at my manual and it says you may have to run the pump for up to 5 minutes with #5 terminal disconnected and the engine off and then open the bleed screw on the top of the solenoid valve until fuel runs out. Make sure the new filter is designed for diesel and not gas. If you can get fuel to flow from the top of the solenoid valve and it still shuts down, you probably have some other problem, many of which will provide a fault indication on the control panel. The solenoid valve is held open by 12V DC and closes with loss of power, shutting off fuel to the engine.

Thanks. The bowl on the fuel/water separator and filter don’t fill up with fuel. I was told I needed to fill it up before screwing it on to help prime the pump.

That may help, but I believe the filter is between the pump and the solenoid valve so the pump should fill the bowl if not pushing against an air lock. That is the purpose of opening the bleed valve on the top of the solenoid.

Thanks. I was told by FP that filling the bowl and filter would help so the pump doesn’t run long and I’m hoping it will help with priming it.
