Need to bottom paint my Fisherman 209 this year. Current coat not too bad but could use a coat or two. Boat is located in Victoria BC and is in salt water 5 months/year. Any suggestions? Internet recommendations very confusing, all over the map. Thanks

Currently in the process of doing our Marlin. It had an “Earl Shives” bottom paint job. ( quick scuff and ablative). Which I had blasted off. Fortunately it hadn’t been there too long as the previous owner had it done recently so the bottom was in great shape. We’re going to barrier coat with Interlux Interprotect 2000e (5) coats then apply a couple 2-3 coats of Micron 66 since the boat is used in the Ocean. It will be coated over the next several days and will post the finished product. You can’t go wrong with the Pettit or Interlux products. Talk to people who boat in your area to see what works for them and their application requirements.

On the subject of bottom paint, Pat, what did you use to blast off your our bottom paint ? Friend is deciding the same on his 30 footer, not sure what is used to remove16 years of old paint.

Hey Trapper
I contracted “Gale Force” a guy out of NJ who covers Md. Pa. De and NJ. He does soda blasting and did a great job. $60 per foot 1800 bucks total and worth every penny of it. Took off all the old paint and hazed the gel. I can’t imagine trying to sand it or use chemicals.

I'd go with an ablative paint like Pettit Hydrocoat. You really have to talk with folks in your area and see which formulation works best for the local conditions. Pat's advice is spot on if you have a lot of paint on the hull now or it is an irregular surface. The barrier coat is important so multi coat it for sure.

Your geographic location would put summer water temp middle 60's ?.. Could mean less growth requiring lower copper content. I would check with other local boaters to see what the "norm" is.. Let us know

All done... 5 coats of Interprotect 2000e epoxy barrier and 3 coats of Interlux Micron 66. Followed instructions to the Tee ... my son Joe put an amazing “shineola” on the hull sides. Launch scheduled for the 12th (next week). 69441E52-93C6-4A3E-B290-35EA28AC11CE.jpeg
