I use them 2 basic ways. Casting off the boat or shore for striped bass, working them near the bottom but not on it for striped bass over structure. You can jig them as well for black Seabass and other species. The bucktail is one of the most versatile lures in the NE. There are many colors, I stick with red, white or chartreuse. Usually 1 and 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 when I can find them depending on conditions. The dress is the art. That is a pretty good deal but I have not used Uncle Josh before. Usually Spro, S&S are the go to, but I'm not a snob, whatever is low cost or a deal.
I figured I load up and spent $100 for the free ship (picked up some tactical angler clips in all three sizes as well, so about $65 in bucktails). I bought the 1, 1/14 and lesser of the 2 and 3 oz just to have.
A lot of people make their own. Melt the lead and then dress them with different materials. The dress affects the lure as much as the weight. You can change the sink rate. retrieve speed and action by the dress size and materials. I'm no expert, don't make my own. I just buy a variety of lures, try new things, read a lot and fish when I can.
