I have discussed this in my post in the general discussion side of the forum but I figured I'd put the details here where it belongs.
As I am constantly trying to update and restore my '87 Overnighter where and when I can while I am starting a project to update and restore the gauge/switch panel I couldn't ignore the corroded capacity plate. It looks nasty and while everything else around the helm will look new and right it will stand out like a sore thumb.
I went on a search for a replacement. First stop, Ebay. While I found a lot of plates for other brands there were none for Grady and it doesn't seen like you can get a blank plate either. That is presumably to avoid forgery? My next step was an email to Grady White customer service and I also asked about the Overnighter 20 dash plaque. Terri Adams sent back an email the same day nicely saying they no longer make or stock the dash plaque and the capacity plate would have to be purchased from NMMA.
She added I would need the hull ID when I call. Their number is 312-946-6200. I called a couple of times but were unable to reach an operator so on the third call I reluctantly left a message. Personally I prefer speak to a person directly and refuse to interact with ant automated response system.
Ok later that evening I was returned a call from a NMMA rep Melissa. I learned that you can get a replacement capacity plate if you provide the hull ID but thats if your boat is no older than 10 years old. Thats as far back as they keep records. Could I provide my info or even the old plate to have a new one made. No sorry.
Melissa said that I should be able to go to any print shop that makes Mylar decals to have a duplicate plate label made.
That may be true but If I hit a print shop up for a one off capacity plate label I may be in for paying much more than I'd like.
Does anyone know of a print shop that has done this before and considers this a routine thing?
Mike.

Re: Capacity plate replacement

Mike, can you get the capacity plate INFO from Grady?

I'll check with the vinyl sign shop near us - I don't know if they've actually done it, but I have sent some people in their direction for this purpose in the past (for those with boats other than the ones we carry).

Re: Capacity plate replacement

Mike, if you end up wanting to get one made and can't find anyone closer to you, Signs By Tomorrow (610) 437-6123 can do it. They don't already have a template, but he said they would cut the set-up fee in half you since you came to them via Peters Marine. Ask for Steven and mention that Peters Marine referred you to them.

Re: Capacity plate replacement

Ok I touched base with Steven at the print shop. Rather than creating a reproduction decal of the original plate I will probably have the print done directly onto an aluminum tag exactly how the original tag was made.
To do one tag with the setup fee reading as the old tag below reads will cost probably enough to make it a frivolous expense.
So what I am considering is to have a number of tags made then sell them off to other Overnighter owners that may want one thus making them available at a reasonable cost.

So...are there any other Overnighter owners that may want a nice new Capacity tag for their boat?
I'm guessing from what I found is it'd run about $15 each give or take. (if I can do it for less I certainly will).
With interest I will go ahead with it.
Mike.
This how it would read, but will look as nice as the tag below.
This tag should work for better than 10 years worth of Overnighter 20's.

Re: Capacity plate replacement

Was there much of a difference in price between the sticker and the one that's printed on aluminum? I wouldn't worry about having a new one made on aluminum because the old one was. There are plenty of high-end boats that simply use the sticker. If you want to do it because you simply like it better that way... sure, go for it. But don't do it because you think it "has" to be that way.

Re: Capacity plate replacement

I will admit to two things, I am a bit of a perfectionist, and also a cheap SOB. Those two traits come in conflict quite often.
I'm a car guy from way back and since I retired from a law enforcement career one of the jobs I've been doing is working as a car show judge for events at a local drag strip.
That kind of thinking bleeds over into my other interests. (sheds a little light on why I have a 225 motor on a 20' fishing boat  )
Ok on the other side of the news, I actually just found a web site where they stock capacity plate decals and make custom decals for about $15. ( cheap side is happy)
I just finished sending my info off to them. I think it will be the easiest route by far and I'll let you know what comes of it.
Mike.

I like it!

Good find on that place to make the plates. I hope it works out for you - good price, too!

Re: Capacity plate replacement

Ok the site I've dealt with is...
https://www.outboarddecals.com

While they have other Grady White decals they didn't have one for the Overnighter...but they do now!
If you don't see what you need I'd suggest you send them a good photo of what you need and they might put one together for you.
Send an email to Amanda ...
sales@outboarddecals.com

I checked the "in stock" section for their site but didn't see the Overnighter listed yet, but you can get it. If you want one for your Overnighter 20 here is the new link....

Enjoy!
