Champlin vs Payne on the Block

It all depends on when you are going and what you are looking for. Both are great spots with great bars. Champlin’s has new owners this summer so it’s hard to say if that will change the vibe. If you’re looking for “amenities”, then Champlins is your place. Both have good night life and Paynes is slightly closer to town if you’re walking. Bottom line, you can’t go wrong with either of them.

We have stayed at Paynes many times but never champlins. A couple of times for we have been rafted with other boats and have had to jocky the boats around a little, because the inside boat will always want to leave first. However When we stayed there for tournaments everyone is roughly leaving at the same time so it doesn't really mater. But they raft boats up at champlins too. Never stayed at champlins, but my friends who go to block to party and hang out for the weekend much prefer it.

Thank you. Now, one more question. What about moorings? Are they owned by the town or do you rent via Champlin’s or Payne? Thx in adv

The moorings are town owned and first come first served. You can hail the harbormaster when you get into the Salt Pond and they will help you out with one. There is also a large anchorage and many people throw the hook for the weekend or longer. We’ve been going for years and 90% of the time we anchor. It’s a sandy bottom so most anchors will hold no problem but it can get really tight in there on a holiday weekend. The other 10% of the time we’re either at Paynes or Champlins depending on the crew.
