Engine problem

Had an issue with yamaha engines on my 282 Sailfish (225 Yamahas)that I'd like some information on if any of you can supply it. Will definitely be talking to my dealer - but its Sunday - so I wanted to talk to someone out ther

Last evening we were heading into our harbor to dock our boat. We were open at about 25 MPH...all of a sudden there was what seemed like a significant loss of power...I throttled down to about 20rpm's and could not get the boat beyond that. We proceeded sluggishly into the docking area and an alarm went off indicating trouble with one of the engines. I shut down, started the Starboard engine and we limped back into port with just the Starboard engine - no further alarms. Pulled up engines at dock - props looked fine - nothing tangled, nothing nicked...help?

Its a 2005, and I believe it was overheating.

Just a wild guess but could you have picked up a plastic bag that wraped around the lower unit causing the overheat? It's possible if you did that when you stoped and shut the engine down that the bag let go as there was no longer any suction or motion to hold in place? As I said just a guess if the engine will start now without alarm.

I have had an overheat once from a bag and know of two people that had major engine damage from the same.

Did the loss of power feel as though you were being pulled? Submerged lobster pot? Hangs up one engine giving a feeling of being pulled. Maybe spun a prop explaining the loss in RPM's? Sounds like you ran something over.

how about water......with us all dealing with e10, make sure you check/replace your seperators and inspect your fuel filters in the motor. I had that issue last year and actually had spare set of filters and wrench with me on the boat....swap them out and I was good to go. Also, check all your fuild levels, lower unit and oil. good luck

Your gauges are the key. What were they indicating? If you can't remember, you may have to duplicate the event to see what is happening. If it was overheat or oil, the rpm's would have decreased on their own if all the sensors were working.

Let the dealer hook up the computer and check codes, and be done with it.

I second TunaT. I was running last weekend back from a 2 hour run and my 2005 225 honda started sputtering and lost a lot of power. I keep a filter wrench in the boat so I popped off the filter, drained it, and kept on going. With the new fuel out there I would always keep a spare water seperator filter on board.
