Captians;

I was hoping some could provide advice.

1987 24 ft Offshore. The 95 Evinrude 225 Oceanpro has a bad cylinder.

I have found a 1998 200 Johnson for sale local.

1. Can I run this boat with a 200hp compared to the 225?

2. I am reading the only difference in these motors (other than one is Johnson, one evinrude) is the Carbs?

3. Can I interchange the parts between Johnson and Evinrude should I keep my old motor as a parts unit?

Thanks, Tom

I had a 1998 192 with Johnson 150 Ocean Pro on her when I bought it 02. That motor was terrible. It sucked gas like no tomorrow. It did not like to be started after it was warm and routinely stalled on us. 1998 waa the year OMC went belly up and Bombardier bought them. If it were me I would not buy the motor from that year.

200 sounds a little small for a 24 footer. why not try and find another 225 or even a 250.

i own a 94 200 ocean pro and have been considering converting it to a 225. if i can find a cheap 225 carb set i will experiment with it but i am not sold that it will be better.

the only difference from a 200 to a 225 johnnyrude carbed ocean series motor from 1992 to 2000 are the carbs, including the metal throttle body (butterfly) manifolds underneath the plastic carb bodies which are an integral part of the carbs. to make the 200 a 225 you swap in 225 carbs. you own 225 carbs so this would be a cheap swap for you. a good evinrude shop could do it for very little more than the price of rebuilding the carbs.

the performance difference from 200 to 225 is reportedly mostly at the top end speed. your cruising and hole shot should be about the same, and your cruising fuel economy may even drop a little, but you can get a few more rpms at wot. it is unlikely you would need to re-prop.

i have the parts and shop manuals and have researched the swap carefully. the main issue to be aware of is that omc played with the carb jetting and other details in the early years of the ocean pros so ideally you want a post-1994 225 carb setup for the swap. in your case a 1995 carb set would be fine.

i suggest you buy the 200 and try it as is. if you notice a performance lag issue, do the swap.

to do the swap you simply remove the plastic carb bodies and the throttle bodies as a unit and then bolt the other set on. then do a link and synch at the end.

i recommend you throughly clean and rebuild the carbs before you swap though, especially the carbs that corresponds to the bad cylinder.

if you don't do it, pm me and i might be willing to buy your carbs!
