was out in my 02 sailfish this weekend and using my port F225 engine to back out of slip, it stalled. wasn't going too fast. no sputtering, it just quit. starboard engine was in neutral and was fine.

i re-started the engine a few seconds later once underway without any trouble.

after a 20 minute run at 4800 rpm coming down off plane and once i put both engines in neutral, port engine stalled again. had to re-start it again, and again it cranked right up without any trouble.

after that, i had no problems the rest of day for 6 hours....even when i backed the boat into slip at end of day.

this has happened once or twice before when backing up....but 95% of the time it is fine.

anybody know what may be causing this or have a guess?

engines always have been serviced by Yamaha mechanic.

Recommend you talk with your mechanic about the exhaust plates on the F225s of that vintage.

If he isn't familiar with the issue, then do some web research on it.

That may or may not be the cause of your stalling, but worth looking in to.

The exhaust port corrotion issue seems to lead to overheating. Not sure but it sounds like you have a fuel issue. Low pressure fuel pump?

I bet your idle is too low. I have 02's on my Marlin and the same thing happens to my starboard motor. It just started this season and it appears that the idle on this motor is now around 600 when it used to be 700. The port is still at 700 and does not stall. I havent fixed mine yet because it takes a mechanic to make the adjustment on the computer. If i pull back the throttles too quickly it stalls sometimes, if I slow it down it usually doesnt stall. Otherwise they run great as they always have. My buddy has an 05 150hp and his does the same thing but much worse. His idle also appears to be lower than it should be.

Lainie have you had any corrision issues on your 02's? I have them as well and no sign of corrision yet. This corrision thing may be a little overblown.

I haven't noticed any but I haven't really looked. I assume we would have to pull the lower units and look up into the lower half of the motor. I did have my water pumps done this past June and I didn't know about this issue until after the pumps were done. i do remember looking up into the lower half of the motors and didn't really notice anything unusual but I wasn't looking for anything specific. My motors run great. I wonder if this corrosion issue has anything to do with location and sality levels. I will look closer next time my lower units are off, i don't plan on taking them off just to check. I just may be a little more diligent in flushing after use.

I have had a few stalls on my 150 late this season. If i start the motor, it runs fine at higer idle (cold) but as it warms up and the engines starts to throttle down, once in a while it stalls. It starts right up and runs fine. I think it is related to the idle speed. The spec for my motor is 730 rpm but sometimes the tach reads about 600. I am not going to do anything until next spring when I do my usual mini tune up.

Ask your qualified Yamaha master mechanic to conduct a sea trial systems test. My guess is that the O2 sensor may need cleaning or replacement and the idle control will need adjustment. The systems test addresses a lot of other items as well.

Suggest you give "Andy" at Shipyard Island Marine a call. He is a VERY knowledgeable resource for Yamaha engines in general. He has posted a large amount of tutorials at thehulltruth.com whcih have saved me $$hundreds in allowing me to do some DIY on our F225. He is a straightup guy and should be helpful in steering you in the right direction. For example as I was doing a water pump change on our F225 for the first time, I was able to give Andy a call about a technical issue and he got me going right away.

Please post for all our benefit what ends up being the cause of your problem and what was the fix. Good luck!

thanks for all the advice....really appreciate it!!

both F225's usuually idle at 600 rpm but i have noticed that occasionally the port motor (the one that occassionally stalls) sometimes dips into the 500 rpm range, which it did the other day, especially when coming off plane when i put them in neutral for a drift.

will ask my mechanic to change the idle and/or check this out when he winterizes the engines;

is the specified idle range for these engines 700 rpm and up?
