Recently took delivery of our winter project, a 1992 explorer 246G with gradydrive and twin '92 Yamaha 150s of the same vintage, sub 500 hours. One needs a lower unit replacement, we'll run these 2 strokes until they won't run anymore and we'll repower. Twins are important for us as its a 60 mile run to the gulf and the peace of mind of having twins is priceless. We have Florence bearing down on us here in coastal NC (Holden beach area) so we had the boat taken straight to an open area with no trees so I figured I'd ask a few questions here.

Our boat (per the PO) does not have the auxiliary tank, I'd like to double check this and if not, have one put in. Where is/should it be located?

We have the grady drive so the tall closed in transom, the center 'tank' on the stern looks like it should be a livewell (and I would love it to be) but was told by the PO its just a cooler. Is this generally the case or an option that wasn't chosen?

Also any other information/advice on this vintage Explorer would be greatly appreciated. We;ll be slipping it year round and changing the thru hulls to stainless is already at the top of the checklist.

Thanks in advance!

I have a '93. The tank in the rear on mine is a livewell, but I suppose it could have been an option. You can pry up a pie plate in the deck to see if there is a tank. I only have the 1 tank as well.

I have the same boat ( '92 246G single). My auxiliary tank is located under the hatch between the helm seats. I installed it myself and it was pretty easy.
Actually had the original tank "cut to fit (length)" as it had a factory flaw which required a replacement of the original tank. Lots of room in there and you could probably go as big as 60 - 70 gallons (mine is 45G).
I plumbed the well between the rear seats as a live well. I believe it was an option but they wanted $600 to do it so I bought a pump and plumbed it myself. The drain is already there and I don't recall if I had to plumb the overflow.
Great boat, I'm on my third engine - a 2016 Yamaha 250 VMAX. Looking forward to at least 10 more years!!
