I am looking to upgrade the old electronics in my Sailfish over the winter. I would like to flush mount a GPS/FF unit in the lower electronics box. I was looking for some photos here to see how big of a unit I can fit without any major modifications. I did see someone here mounted one where the yamaha gauges are. I was going to look next time I am at the boat to see if moving the gauges is reasonable, but I do like them where they. I do not want to gimbal mount anything to the dash either. Any information would be great!

You lose a lot of storage space giving up a box just to flush mount something.

I saw a pic somewhere in my travels where someone split the box in half to flush mount on 1 side and still had a nice little storage box on the other side.

I beg to differ with the loss of space. It was very easy to relocate the junk that was previously in this space:

That was my 98 272 Sailfish. I will be doing the same to my 2000 Marlin 300 this winter except it will be with Simrad NSS9 evo2's :)

Those are great photos. That is pretty much what I would like to do. i assume you made that plastic housing, what type of material is that and do you need anything special to bend it? The current electronics are mounted in that location, but not flush mounted, so they are difficult to see and it does not look very nice.

I am leaning towards the Lawrence HDS, the HDS 8 seems reasonable since it is a Gen1, as long as it will fit.

It is starboard material. Plastic. You can get it in different colors. It is what most use to build custom dashes. I used it on my last boat. It supposedly cuts like wood but you have to cut slow or it melts from heat. You can file/round off the edges to give it a more finished look. There are no bends in it. It is multiple pieces.

Thanks FireMedic. You will need to maximize the available area inside the box by removing a portion of the liner. A Fien Multimaster or similar knock-off of the Fein does a great job of removing the fiberglass at the odd cutting angle required. As long as your planned unit (s) are less than the size of the NSS8's you won't have a problem. Yes Fishbust is correct. The material used was 1/2" Black King Starboard. from West Marine or Jamestown Distributors. one 12" x 36" piece will yield enough material for the job. All components of the system including radar, XM weather and Simnet as well as a mini sub panel for power were all located on a piece of starboard installed against the back wall of the head in the athwarts berth.

I do like the twin displays. Much better than a single unit and using split screen.
