I need help in solving this problem. I went out last week and my boat went about 400 yards befor the motor ( single 1999 225 Yamaha 2 stroke ) cut off. It wouldn't turn over like it was out of fuel. I Thought the problem might be water in the fuel. I had just put 70 gallons in my main tank on my 1999 Gulf stream 3 weeks before and 3 cans of sea foam. It had a new fuel filter installed last November ( the you have in side the bilge area.) Today I put on a new 21 micron napa fuel filter and same thing wouldn't start. When I was looking over the motor, I noticed that parts of the engine's fuel filter were missing and this fuel filter wouldn't fill more than half way. No matter how much I used the primer bulb. I had just dumped the fuel in it and put fresh fuel in as I did the boat's other fuel/water filter. My question is if filler element and the red ring are missing will this stop fuel system from working ? I had just got the boat back from a Grady Dealer and had them check the motor. Everthing worked fine before the trip the the shop. Just wonder if maybe the Mechanic forgot to put parts back.....It's happens.

Thanks for any imput

Get the correct filter first and go from there..

You also want to make sure the filter housing is tight. Had one work loose once and the engine would stop after a few seconds. I also thought I might have water in the fuel but noticed that there was a rainbow sheen in the water and smelled gas. Tightened everything up and the problem went away. I think there's an O-ring that could also be missing since you're missing the internals also.

Why did the mechanic take the filter out in the first place??

that filter will never ever get fully filled

ring has to be on the bottom, just a water indicator

better throw that 21 micron filter away, because that will not stop any water at all!

I have a spin on racor fuel filter with a clear water separating bowl mounted in my bilge. at the first sign of motor issues i shine a flashlight thru the bowl to check for contaminates. It helps diagnose the condition of your fuel, then you can move on to looking at other things. Hope this helps.

Thanks to All

I tried all of that......I guess I'll have to take he to be check out by the G.W. place where they did the work and see what is the problem....I also plan to get one of those Racor Filters.....

Yep, that hull mounted fuel filter needs to go. Surprised a Grady dealer wouldn't install a 10-micron. Sounds like air is getting in somewhere. Or, the screen on the HP fuel pump is clogged.
I'm researching those 2-micron Racors. Does anyone know if they make a model that screws right onto the Yamaha mount?

Your probably right. That's why I want to install one of those Racors. Never have to take that filter apart or the VST. Not to mention no worries with the other down stream filter screens ever clogging.
