I have to replace my Phasor 3.5kw genset, should I get the same or is there a better one that will fit?

I can't help you out but was wondering if you could answer a few questions for me regarding gensets on older Marlins. I just picked up a '90 marlin and am thinking about adding a genny.

How cramped and difficult is it to work on and maintain the genny? How about when you have to acess other mechanicals? Any chance you have a few pics of the installation? I've yet to see a genset installation on a Marlin (other then the drawing in the manual)

Thanks

P.S. I have a 7.5kw Westerbeke on my 40' Pacemaker. I have about 300 hours on it. Its not bad but its had issues from day one and at times we (me and the generator tech) have been stuck waiting for parts or tech answers. Not real sure they'll be top on my list for the Marlin

The phasor is a tight fit,but I think any genset in the 3.5kw range would be tight. I bolted 2-2x1/4" Al angle iron the my struts and then made a base with some more Al angle irons that the genny bolts to. Then I bolted that base to the Al on the struts, this way when I have to remove it, I undo the bolts on the Al on the struts instead of the struts themselves. I'll try to get some pictures as soon as I can but I am pretty busy right now with Gustav being down on us.

Thanks I appreciate the feedback. Don't kill yourself getting pics. If you happen to have the hatch open for service and can snap a few perfect. No rush. Good luck with the storm.

Kohler 5E

In my 1992 Marlin I took out a Kohler 6.5 CZE and put in a 5E. I could not fit it in with the sound shield. I slightly modified the existing plywood base from the old generator. It fits but it's tight and hard to service. Sticking a generator under a sealed deck with poor access is not that smart. If I were to do it again I would look at getting one of the new Fischer Panda diesels that come in the self contained container/sound shield. Adding a diesel tank would be a headache but I think their lifespan is better.
