Hi All,

New to Grady (taking delivery of a new Freedom 215 in late May!) and to this forum-- and glad this forum exists.

Planning on having the dealer install Garmin 8612XSV GPSMAP/Sounder with Transom Mount Transducer.

Just checking that this 12in touchscreen is not too large for the console-- dealer says it will fit but I would appreciate if anyone has experience?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.

What dealer is doing installation? With your screen name, I guess your dealer is Seel's? Looking at the pics and video of the 215, the 12" will fit nicely in your dash. I have a 12" Simrad going flush mount on my 228 and the 12" is perfect size for my panel.

Yes, Seel's is the dealer. Thanks for the advice and the pics. Good luck with your project and that is a nice looking Seafarer!

I have a 9 inch in my 208 console. I dont think a 12 would work in my 208. But not sure of the console size of the 204? I am also not flush mounting.

Seel's are good people. They will do you right. I've been dealing with Nancy for quite a few years. She takes care of the parts end of it and has helped me out often. Al is back in service, known him for years.

Do the install yourself. It's not hard, just a little time and planning.

Just another quick question...why did you choose simrad over Garmin or raymarine? I’m seeing more people make that decision. I really like navionics and I want the experience to be seem-less with my plotter. Also who has the best transducer? Thanks

I have a new 215 also with the 10 inch . I would put the 12 . In split screen mode you will be glad you did. If you ordered the boat put a Windlass in!!!! I love the boat . The only thing I forgot is the windlass and I miss it. If your going to fish get the windlass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think it's personal preference. I had Lowrance on my previous boat, and I landed there after looking at and playing with several multifunction displays at a boat show. My latest boat came with a Garmin and it was fine. Good maps, great sonar; however the UX wasn't exactly what I was used to. I wanted to add radar and was trying to decide if I wanted to invest in the system or replace it. I later landed a deal on new Navionics equipment I couldn't pass up, so I went with Simrad.

I would say do your research and play with some models so you can get a handle on the differences between the brands. As far as transducers go Airmar is the solid choice. Transom mount is ok, but I would consider doing a 20° Tilted through hull. You'll get a much cleaner read while under speed. There are several models and that all depends on how and where you'll be using your boat. Again do your research, including searching posts within here, so you can feel confident about your decisions. Hope that helps.

I went with Simrad because I had a Totalscan transducer, Sirius WM-3 weather module, and a remote GPS antenna already installed. I switched from twin Lowrance Carbon 7's to the single Simrad NSS12. It was all plug and play. Very happy with my switch to the single unit. Just completed the flush mount install of my unit too.
