Hello all...

Over the next few weeks I'm going to be building a custom dashboard on my 99 Grady Sailfish 28. As a part of this project I'm literally going to grind off the radio box of my helm, build and fiberglass in a new box/dash to support a pair of Garmin 7012's. Along with this rebuild, I'm taking the liberty to also include some Autometer Marine gauges as well as some other techie features (like independent batty monitoring, etc...)

This boat has two Yamaha two stroke outboard motors 250 OX66 Salt water editions... My question to the group is if you were designing a custom gauge cluster, which gauges would you use for these motors?

GPS Speedo
Tachometers (2) - Port and Starboard engine monitoring of RPMs
Oil Temp - I'm assuming I don't need this as the oil is being fed in via the two stroke mixer, correct?
Oil Pressure - I'm assuming I don't need this as the oil is being fed in via the two stroke mixer, correct?
Fuel (2) Primary and Secondary Tanks
Trim Tab Readout - I get this with the yamaha gauges so I guess this is overkill...
Water Temperature - Does this apply?
Vacuum/Boost - Does this apply?
Fuel Pressure - I'm assuming that this would apply that that I could tap into the lines after the fuel tank selector valve OR measure pressure going into each motor.

Some people may question why not stick with the stock Yamaha gauges and my only response is because I really like the look of the newer autometer marine series gauges and, being a car guy, like a nice set of analog gauges to look at so I know what is going on with my motor(s.)

Any thoughts/comments would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Gps speed is great, but it sounds like you will have your gps a few inches away, do you need both?

Tachometer (two) is a must, I am not sure if you can interface the older SW series motors to the 7012gps?

Fuel tank level is a must, however you may be able to wire them into the 7012.

Trim tab readout, I think you need the Bennett display for that.

Engine trim and tilt, yes that is necessary and you want to be able read both at the same time.

Water temp is an optional sender I think. Again may be able to interface with the 7012.

The other items you mentioned are not compatable with your engines as far as I know.

I think you may also want to consider oil level in the 2 cycle tanks and voltage output of each engine.

I have not seen an Autometer gauge up close since I was a teenager, but if memory serves me correctly they are not rated for marine use. I think you may end up with fogged gauges within a few weeks. Hate to see you spend all that time and money only to find out that you ran out of oil or fuel twenty miles off the coast due to a faulty gauge.

two Yami multi function tachs, one fuel gauge (selector switch for tank pick), motor trim and oil tank level info and alarms are included in multi function Yami tachs. Don't know how you would do it with aftermarket gauges.

And also, fuel management gauge with totalizer, as optional.

I would think you could get by with water pressure and water temperature gauges only. Seems like you already monitor the other necessary items.

I would also be worried about not having the audible alarms for the low 2S oil level and the high temp alams..as Bob mentioned, its in the Yami system already......Unlike a car, you're not going to be watching every second of the motor operation when trolling or fishing.....you'll be watching the GPS, depth sounder for fish, radar etc, or.you may jump off the helm to help on deck for some reason while in neutral and running and the alarm is good to have...by the time you see the temp go in the red, it may be too late......fuel pressure? Not sure if it applies....maybe flow scanners for fuel consumption if you have the extra cash.

Please post pics of the glasswork!!
