Looking to purchase the right anchor rode for my windlass. Have had problems with current rode getting getting crimped when retracting. Getting a bit old to be pulling the anchor by hand. Gotta get this thing to work right. Thanks for your input.

8 plait, and a good swivel between anchor and chain. Something else to consider, maybe there is a different amount of twist on the rode going down than there is coming up, or anchoring in different depths, so that you build up a twist that stays in your rode.
If it were a spinning reel, you would cut all the hardware off the end, and trail the line behind a moving boat to remove the twist. I wouldn't cut off my chain splice, but you might try the same idea by trailing the rode behind the boat, leaving the chain end attached to the boat.

if its older line you can also try soaking it in some fabric softener

I'm thinking the same thing. We don't know if this is a new problem or existing or even a new install. But, 9 times out of 10, problems with windlass vs: line is due to old and/or dirty rope. Rope needs to be cleaned every so often - it gets stiff and dirty from salt and such, which leads to retrieval and lay problems. You can try cleaning/soaking - and even flipping end for end - but at some point you may just need to replace it.

Often the rope gets crimped when it has too much resistance laying in the anchor looker assuming of course it is the correct rope for the capstan. The resistance can be causes by stiff rope, rope that is getting stuck on the walls of the locker , too much line (length0 or a poor installation of the windlass with respect to where the line falls into the locker. For test, drop some line, then retrieve. As soon as the line knots up in the capstan, stop the windlass and go forward to take a look in the locker or just use your hand to see if the line is piled up near where the line drops. Spread it out and then give the windlass a little down and then up. If the line retrieves OK for a while, it probably was the pile of rope that caused it to get jammed in the capstan. New line may help as might cleaning the walls of the locker and possibly scrapping ant loose paint or gelcoat. The smother the walls, the easier the rope will slide down in the locker.
