Hole

I have a 1996 voyager and yesterday noticed that there was a factory made hole with a loose piece of plastic on the starboard side of the bow. The hole is a foot and half or so above the waterline and a third of the way back from the very front and there is no tube or anything that feeds the hole.I am an obvious novice when it comes to boats. The loose plastic piece was a ring that went into the hole and I took it out. I suspect the hole is to allow air to get into hull but I'm not really sure. Does anyone know the purpose of the hole and and more importantly what material I should use to resceure the ring I removed? Thanks in advance.[/url]

This sounds like a plastic through hull that has the outer ring broken. If you look inside the hull there should be a hose attached. This sounds like the drain for your forward bilge pump. You definitely need to check this out and make the proper repairs.

Oh yea! Any open hole in the hull is BAD, even if it's above the water-line. There has to be a hose somewhere by the hole with the other end of a thru-hull fitting clamped on it. Don't use the boat until it's fixed.

What is this hole for?

I posted earlier under the user name grosseiler, but for some reason, I got deactivated.

Continuing this discussion can anyone identify why this opening is here and what should I do to repair it? It is a 1.25" bore, with a collar, open to the inner hull. It is 1.5 to 2 feet above the water line, beside the driver side cockpit seat. I can't feel any hose or connection when I stick my finger inside. The collar probably threaded down onto something, then broke off. I don't think this is a bilge port, being so high up. Any ideas?

That hole is for the through hull fitting for your forward bilge pump. From inside the cabin, pull up the inspection or 'pie' plate on the cabin floor. There should be a bilge pump. That pump is supposed to have a hose running to that hole in the side of your boat.

Not having that hose in place has the potential to let water into your forward bilge area.

I found the pump and then took off another pie plate in the forward starboard compartment and found a very small access space and was able to retrieve the hose and remove the connector piece. I need to order the appropriate part but then...geez how the Hell do I get the tube up to that hole and connect it. Any ideas?

Does anyone know where I can buy a new one? a part number?

Thanks for the tips, I found a similar connector at West Marine for $8 and other than becoming a contortionist, I was able to re attach the bilge hose fairly easily.

I was just about to write that a friend with a similar problem wound up cutting a new pie plate to get access. I don't know how the heck you got that re-attached!

Welcome to the world of thru hull replacements. Now I hope you have either replaced the other thruhulls or your about to because they are all in the same shap as the one that broke.

ebay or greatlakesskipper.com. i just went through the same thing. i bought all new perkos on greatlakesskipper.com for less than 150 bucks (7, including 1 1/2 inch)

PS...all bronze. West Marine had them for 40/piece
