Hey everyone,

I’m looking for some advice on replacing the hydraulic steering hoses on my 1988 Grady-White Offshore 24’ with a 200HP Yamaha 4-stroke. The current setup is Teleflex/SeaStar hydraulics, but the hoses are completely worn, and I’m not sure of the exact part numbers. I also heard about folks using just plain old transmission fluid instead of special hydraulic fluids, which would be nice because I have gallons of that stuff already. Thoughts on that?

A couple of things I’m trying to figure out:

• The hoses seem to be different sizes—is that normal?

• Would a 3’ kit work, or should I go longer?

• Any recommendations on where to buy the right replacements?

• The fittings that connect to the ram need to be reused—does anyone know if they’re 5/16” or 3/4”?

I just want to make sure I get the right ones the first time around. Any links or advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

So...that is some really old stuff. Does it steer?

You have fittings in the motorwell. So yes you just need the 3' hoses(or same length as what you see) ...assuming whats on the other side of the fittings is good.

The other side of those fittings might be metal hydraulic lines to the helm. They might be good or crap... you need to look.

The fittings..can't tell from picture..you might have the old "Flared" couplers.

You might be better off just buying a complete new Seastar setup.

You can buy a gallon of Mil-H-5606A hydraulic fluid on amazon way cheaper than Seastar fluid. Then you can afford to give it a good flushing....
Do not use transmission fluid.
