Installing Blue Seas Add a Battery to ‘95 tournament 192?

I am going to install a Blue Seas add a battery kit to my 1995 Tournament 192. I’m replacing the battery cables to the motor as they are shot. While im at it I’m going to go ahead and run new wires to the helm and install a new fuse block and clean everything up. Probably run new wiring to pretty much everything as this is a 30 yr old boat and most of the wiring is due to be replaced.

All this said for those that know the factory location for the batteries is under the starboard jump seat. The 4 position Perko switch is currently mounted next to them on the wall under the gunwale. All this is exposed to the elements except for the little protection they get from whatever is above them. I guess it works but I wish there were a better option. Pictures were taken right after I took possession of the boat and before I cleaned it up.

Anyone with a Tournament 192 installed an add a battery kit and how did you end up mounting all the components? (ACR, Breaker, Switch, Ground Terminal Block etc…)

Per ABYC codes and for your safety, the battery disconnect switch has to be located close to the physical battery. I can't remember if the spec is 18 inches or 24 inches.

The Perko switches are well sealed again by ABYC requirements and can get splashed without major issues. When installing new switches, the back connections can be sprayed with something like Boeshield T9 for extra 'weather' protection.

I get that. I was not only concerned about the switch but also the batteries and all the other items I listed that I’ll be installing.

Other than the fact that you have to get down on your knees to "see" what you are doing with the current battery switch (or make a small sign and stick it on the side of gunwale so you don't have to actually look at the switch)... the placement of the batteries and the switch are totally fine where they are. As noted, just spray them with something like T9.

You don't need the "kit" - you already have the battery switch. All you need is an ACR and wire that up. Put that wherever you would like. On the aft wall... or the side of the bimini top holder would be my choice.

If you're looking for projects... adding a drainable fuel/water separator is a good idea. I put one on the inside "side" of the stbd bimini top holder.

You don't need to buy a ground bus for the ACR - just use one of the battery negative posts.

Also as noted above, the inline fuses for the ACR just get installed... well... inline within a short distance from the batteries.

Thanks for the replies so far everyone.

I already have the mini acr “kit” and ground bus bar so I’ll go ahead and replace the old switch. Gives me a little peace of mind knowing it’s brand new.

I already installed a new fuel/water separator bracket and filter when I replaced all the fuel lines, so I’m good to go there. I moved it from the transom behind the batteries to between the bimini top holder and splash well. Makes it much easier to access than were it was!

I hadn’t thought about the area around the bimini holder. I guess when it warms up a little I’ll crawl under there and see.
