I have a new GW with JABSCO electric head and overboard discharge. Everything works fine but the overboard discharge. I open the intake and outflow seacocks.

what is the trick for turning the overboard discharge on or off? It seems you have to hold the button down for 5 seconds. Sometimes that works. It is not obvious how to turn it off (should I just let it run till it shuts itself off?). Are there instructions somewhere? I can find a manual but it mostly discusses installation but not operation.

Assuming that you have a holding tank, for when overboard is not allowed, there is probably a Y-valve in the plumbing, that directs waste to either the deck pump out fitting, or overboard. Sounds like you may be pumping to the deck fitting, which is closed, luckily.

Just for clarity, can you pump directly overboard from the toilet(unlikely), or does everything go through the holding tank?

Open the tank discharge valve in the bilge. Press and hold the empty button until you hear the macerator engage and then release. It will empty the tank and time out itself when empty.
