Just purchased a 1992 226 Seafarer with a 200 Johnson... During our pre purchase inspection it was brought up the control was a bit sloppy especially using the neutral lockout function.

Since there were other issues to deal with I put this on the “we’ll get to it” list…

I have had the boat out a couple of times now and I think the distance from neutral to actual first throttle response is a least 3-4 inches from Neutral, both forward and reverse. This made my day real interesting leaving the dock for the very first time as nothing happened when I goosed the throttle attempting to make a right turn out of my slip...

I haven’t measured it, but it seems that from the neutral position I am almost at 3/4 throttle travel before the engine responds… Full throttle seems Ok, But who knows I could have another 50 HP hidden in there. I don't have enough experience with type boat to compare..

Now there is no problems engaging forward or reverse, as that is immediately after the neutral position.. I’m thinking this has to be wrong???

Anyone with experience with this issue or ideas or the same combination?

Thanks
Ron

You're saying it's engaging gear as it should in teh right position, but delayed throttle response?, so you have to check where the throttle cable connects at the the motor to see if there is anything loose there, if not then it's the control. The service manual will show how to set the linkages up.

Sloppy Control

Bob

You are correct on the lack of throttle response ... No Manuals however
I guess I will look at both the engine side and the underside of the Control if I can...

pull the shift and throttle cables off motor
try shifting and giving throttle
if it feels sloppy
its the cables or comtrols
