I would recommend either the Yamaha 8 or 9.9. I use the 9.9 as a trolling motor on my 305 Express and it works fine. Can push and control the boat in seas up to about 4' and winds up to 15kts. Above that and it can't make the turns into the wind. I've actually trolled with it in 6 to 8' seas but there wasn't a 15 kt wind with the waves they were mainly caused by currents.

Back when I had a 24'Explorer (mid-90's), powered by a Yamaha 250, I also had a kicker for trolling. I used a Yamaha 9.9 4-stroke, and it did fine. Their 9.9's have a lot of torque, and have larger props with a lower pitch, so they work well. I think Yamaha' niche' with that engine might be for sailboats. It pushed my boat up to about 6 knots. And just plumb it right into your main fuel tank (use the aux pickup); no messing with gas/oil mix.

Unlike Yamaha, doesn't the Merc 15 hp have same block as 10 hp, and only a few bucks more?
