I was watching the Weather in Port A for the coming weekend. Now, as with all things, too early to tell, but the forecast for Saturday is gusts over 30mph and 5-7ft waves.

Not sure I want to try to fish that, if it holds.

60% chance scattered thunderstorms, but they appear to be early pre-dawn.. but, sleeping on the boat might get wet for the others lol

Still, wind gusts of 37knots.. predictions of 5-7ft waves, some say 3-5.

How would you all read the weather if planning a trip.

Again, still 5 days to go and could push out.

Yea, all the different models have different ideas of what the weather will be. This is what I am watching:

Some say 3-5, but those 37mph gusts... they tell a different story.

The plan is...we keep an eye on it. If it holds true, we push out the trip to head out late Saturday and fish on Sunday, come back Monday. If it pushes out more, we push the trip out till we see a better window, probably a couple weeks. More time to get the boat ready is all, no big deal.

Eh, there is, about the same distance as the coast, maybe 30 minutes closer. The only other lakes are way too small or too too crowded and steep of an incline.

Holding out for a possible 1-day shift of plans. Will see what the weather looks like tomorrow and the next day.

Not too worried, at this point it is just a waiting game for weather.

I wouldn't fish that in your boat. I have fished 4-6 in the Keys and Bahamas and it was a pain in the butt. 3-5 in my opinion is the most tolerable sea state for any boat 40 feet or under. The other side of the equation is the wind driven chop on top of the sea state. The period of the sea matters. 6 foot seas with 10-12 second period is very different than ones with 4-6 second period. It's one being caught in a storm versus going offshore in the snotty stuff too start.

Oh, not going out in that... was looking to see if it pushed out, factored down, or held steady. If it pushes out, we cancel all together as it is not going to push out enough to clear the entire day... and I do not want to get caught in it coming in.

If it factors down as we get closer, we may consider it.. depending on how accurate. If it holds steady, then we may head down there the night of, and go out the next day after it is past. That is looking like 0-2ft waves with 01ft swells at 6-7 seconds.

We will see. Right now, waiting game.

Are you planning this fishing trip without a couple of shakedown runs under your belt? Seems if I'm remembering right, each time out you had some sort of boat issue. I wouldn't plan on a fishing trip until I knew the boat was 100%.

Just me though.

Wear you life vest. It makes it a lot easier for the Coast Guard to find your body:)
Seriously, if you expect anything near 37 mph gusts, you don't belong out there.

Not sure about where you are but I’m not convinced the wind waves will drop that fast in a day; even if they do the forecast could be off by 12 hours and you could get stuck in it.

Agree with the others that it would be better to give the lake a try this weekend. You can still test run the boat and practice launching/retrieving with your crew; reps always help :)

Lord, guys... relax. I am planning a trip within sight of land. I am not planning a 40-60 mile trip, probably within 3 miles of shore. I am just looking for mapping stuff while I plan my trip and I tend to get on a roll and start looking for things. I map.. it is a main thing about boating that I love... my maps. If you could see what I have accumulated over the years, it would boggle your mind heh

This IS a shakedown trip. I just do not want to go on a shakedown trip alone and to get someone to go, they want to fish so... that is why I am doing it before Snapper season starts as they won't expect me to take them beyond the 9-mile.

My guess is we will take her a mile or so out, get away from some boats, let me get some drone footage and put them on some kings and maybe fish the jetties a bit. We may run along the shoreline south to stay close to land and still hit a few small rigs like Pelican etc, which people reach with a kayak, but no.. I am not being unsafe. I am not taking her out further till I get the ERIPB onboard.

As for life vests, I always have them with me. Do I always wear them? Eh.. when moving, yes. I suspect 90% of the people on here are the same or worse. What I DO do... and learned it from my dad, is I walk my boat. I have a rip cord on the emergency bag so people do not have to fiddle with the zipper. I walk my guests through each scenario and what to do and I make sure folks are safe and can keep me safe.

Besides, I need to be in close enough to do a live feed on FB and ask questions if need be and well, cannot do that 9 miles out.

So, appreciate the concern, but... as I have always said, "There are old pilots, and there are bold pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots."

Holds true with Captains as well.

I even told my wife..."I am going to leave you a copy of our plans and path I expect to take with any possible changes. If I deviate, I will text you before I do so and tell you "go to plan 'B' page".. lol

I do not take chances, I make plans, hence why I like to know the water depth... I am planning for in close Mangrove fishing etc.. so need to find any cuts and areas inside my limits to put them on fish and satisfy my help.

But thanks:) I know, I am a noob with a Grady... and I tend to ask a LOT of questions... because I worry too, but I am not a noob... I just do not have other fishermen around me, much less boating people.. and my terms are different than most as I just "do" what I learned, don't have a word for it or name.. does not mean I do not know what I am doing or how to do it....but I do not let that keep me from asking any and all questions because I can always learn more.

Been boating for decades, just not on this type/size boat, and as such, I am taking it very slow.

As for lakes, I wish there was a closer one, but Lake Travis, which is closer, the only ramp I know would work is Mansfield and it is so steep... not taking a chance with a F-150 and an 8000lb boat... it will drag my truck into the water.

Lake Buchanan... I know how to fish that without a GPS... but it is only like 20-30 minutes closer than the coast....I am more hoping to meet new and more experienced people at the boat while we are docked and they can physically show me "the ropes".

My real goal is to float the boat... tie her up.. and start getting to know people AT the place I plan to spend 90% of the boat time with. If I can get a good network of really experienced friends, then I can start learning real world secrets that will enable me to sell this and buy a 75 ft yach.. nm.. just kidding.. I want to meet new REAL boating people.. lol.. and tied up at that dock, across from the biggest boat ramp down there.. I will meet new people.. and, I will get to shake down the boat.... see?;) Method to my madness.. ;)

I agree.. I doubt the waves will die down much.. but if they get below 5 ft... I am fine with that... and, it gives me a little more safe environment to feel this boat out. Anyone can drive her on a glass surface... I just want an opening.. does not need to be a perfect one, but I will take a calm after a storm vs a storm buildup.

I have been on a ship in a storm that would ... let's say it would give you nightmares, going through the Straight of Gibralter....tied to 2 lanyards to do soundings. I can take 3-5ft waves. I do not want to, but I need to get this boat on the water and see what she can do and I would like to do it on the coast to be close to real services if I need to get something fixed. I do it on Lake Buchanan... I will have to flag down someone that MAY be able to tow me.. and then drag it back home.

I expect to stay off the water on Saturday....we are planning to go out AFTER the storm, not during or before. We simply will drive there on Saturday and dock her that evening when the storm has passed.

I may still push it out. I do not care if the weather is nice on Sunday. If I have to launch in a storm and tie up in too windy conditions, may not care to try that.. one or the other, but not both.. We will see. I only have to go a couple hundred feet to tie it up at the dock.. heh, but the other guys have to sleep outside the cabin so.. rain may not be worth it lol

Russ, those numbers all over your chart(11, 13, 17, etc) are water depth, either in feet or fathoms. Depth soundings are on every GPS chart system that I have ever seen. They all have a shallow water alarm as well, which you can set for whatever depth you choose. If you are using an up to date Vision chip in your Garmin, put in your boat specs, height, draft(if you draft 3, put in 6)etc., and it will not chart a course over water less than that depth, but will take you around.
Get the Windfinder app on your phone, and put in your locations. Also My Radar, and turn on the wind indicators in the 'layers' menu. You want the interval in seconds to be at least 2, preferably 3 times the wave height in anything over 2-3 feet.
You keep wishing for a "Grady guy" to go on your maiden cruise, but I doubt there is anyone on this board who would take your boat in the ocean on a shakedown cruise, in anything less than ideal conditions.
