Macerator replacement on Marlin

Let me reply to myself and others that may open this link:

Grady dealership just told me they suggest swapping out the entire tank for an external macerator and smaller holding tank. The original 2002 model and some other years had an internal macerator and constantly freezes up during non use. Bad design. Probably a $500 job still waiting for quote.

macerator

I took the entire motor apart (I felt like Mike Rowe) and got it unfrozen.. but couldn't get it to operate. I can't imagine having a smaller tank- I think you are looking at way more than $500, though

What year is your boat? Is this something that was redesigned recently and you can buy the new parts?

Bill N- if you are talking to me? it;s a 2002 Marlin- a new pump was somewhere around $600 if I remember correctly- decided it wasn't worth spending the money on

I just bought a 2002, and yes, I am told it was redesigned at some point. Grady is not recommending fixing the problem but replacing the entire tank with a new tank and EXTERNAL macerator. They just freeze up too often. And here I was all excited about going from a porta potti to electric marine head. :D

you don't need the macerator- it doesn't affect the pump out- it's only used for pumping overboard. that being said, there are acutally 2 macerators- the other one is part of the head itself. That is only about $100 +/- (educated guess)

also- if we are using the boat we have to pump every weekend- the tank is too small as it is!! (you'll find out when it starts stinking)

that was my thinking too, until I found out how much a new pump was[/quote]

You guys must overnight more than we do. Or fish with more women and kids. I empty the tank on my 265 once or twice a year.

A couple hours removing and cleanning the old pump only to have it freeze up again...for good. I can't stand not having everything work. I'm going to replace the tank with an external macerator. I will post up the results and cost.
