Microwave removal

I have a 2006 282 Sailfish and want to remove the microwave and put storage, how you remove it? Any pics of before and after?

"Usually" you remove the top trim and tilt the unit back to get it over the bottom trim....wiggle it out. Might have to remove more trim.

I'm going to work on this over the weekend because mine went out from salt water leak coming into back side of it. Leak is fixed so I'm ready to install the new replacement. I will take some pics as I figure it out. I will post some pics of my rub rail reseal too. I learned a few things that I wish I had known before I started and another idea I tried that worked well but did cost me some time. Hopefully someone posts some pics I can look at before I start. Thanks SkunkBoat for the idea about the trim. I had no idea where to even start so now I do.

We bailed on the microwave for the very same reason. We bought a custom door and made it a storage compartment.

sorry for my late delay. I don't have a pic right now, but the space is big because the floor is recessed once you pull the microwave out of there. I'm guessing you have about 12-14" of vertical space inside. I will look for pictures. I got the door made here: http://www.buckwoodcraft.com/king-starboard-boat-doors/

Hello. The microwave in my 2007 282 Rusted out from the back side as well. I tried a bead of silicone on the underside of the rub rail but it still leaks. I have been told that the only solution is to remove the rubrail and seal the joint as well as the screw holes

Hmmm, this leaking from port side to microwave area seems to be consistent issue for 282’s.
mine suffered the same issue, but found was due to the hole cut to fit the port window was poorly cut and a bit too big in one spot which made sealing the window perfectly difficult And hence the small leak. I actually could see a sliver of daylight coming thru between the window frame and cabin hull! I pulled the window, repainted the window as the black was chippin, better positioned the window so no daylight came thru the opening and used window installers butyl rubber tape to seal and mount the window and stop the leak. Then pulled the microwave and used the space for storage. That custom hatch looks great! I actually re-installed the microwave which included pulling the surrounding trim again when I sold the boat, that was a PITA. FYI, i didn’t miss taking the microwave out after owning the boat for 10+ years.

I re-read this more closer and see that you did just a door vs a glove box, I was going to throw a custom glove box in there, but now I am thinking just a door to get max space. Thoughts?

there's a lot of usable space behind there after you remove the floor holding the microwave. Use it all! LOL

I made a door out of Starboard. Lined cabinet with headliner material (not shown in photo). I have two rows of plastic boxes - 10 total.

I wanted to update this post as I was able to remove the Tappan microwave and replace with a microwave purchased from walmart (Mainstays 0.7 cu ft Compact Countertop). A few notes below if helpful for others:

Removing trim pieces & microwave:
-start by removing the metal rod (2 screws through the top and one through bulkhead)
-you'll need to remove the dark acrylic trim pieces at the top as well (5 screws in total)
-remove the countertop (1 screw on lefthand side, 2 on right hand side behind sink area)
-you may need to remove your head unit if in this area
-my fridge was a rusted mess so have cardboard handy

Installing new microwave:
-the replacement microwave was not as wide as the existing so i had to reposition the starboard base that the microwave feet seat in
-the new microwave also has tapered feet so after drilling new holes in the starboard, it was still prone to moving around
-I installed a lashing strap (battery tie downs may be too short so I went with 10ft and cut down) with stainless steel buckle and stainless steel tie downs

General:
-buy all new quality, stainless screws as many are prone to stripping and were rusted. I didn't have any of the issues with water intrusion from the rub rail others have mentioned
-a 90 degree angle bit is a must
-I replaced the existing marinco 12v cigarette lighter with a blue seas dual usb charger. This is a good spot to have a charger when overnighting
-be careful not to damage the counter top, lay a towel out as youll be using it often.

Pretty happy with how it turned out
