I bought the navionics vision +, micro sd card. I got it for relief shading when bottom fishing. My last subscription expired in june 23. For the life of me I cannot get my compatible chartplotter to give any indication i am trying to upgrade. I have active captain. I assumed just plug the little card in and it would start the upgrade. Looking for any help I can get.
thanks

The Garmin Navionics Vision+ doesn't ship the shaded relief charts on the card. It relies on Active Captain. A little confusing how it works.

First of all I use Active Captain (AC) on an iPad. The larger screen is much easier to use. It works with a phone but it's harder to see.

Go to Garmin.com and login. User>Account>Manage Your Data>View your data>View your subscriptions. You should see your subscription.

On your iPad or phone connect to internet. Go into Active Captain>Charts>My Charts and check your subscriptions. You new subscription should be listed.
Go back to main Chart screen. Select the icon on the right that looks like a stack of paper - it will show chart types. Select shaded relief. Zoom in and look around. You should see shaded relief charts.

This is the confusing part - AC learns what charts you need as you look around on pad/phone when not connected to the boat and downloads them to your phone/pad. Whatever charts you look at here will get downloaded from the internet and later uploaded to your unit the next time you connect to the boat network with Active Captain. You can also use the main menu>Download Charts and select a region. Do this and you should see AC download. When it finishes connect to boat network and let AC do its thing. Don't select more chart area then you need for now. It takes a long time and you can always add more.

I have help members and friends with this process a few times. Sometimes it's best to format the Active Captain SD card. Also I have a 32gb card installed - only using 8gb (Vision+ East and South and upgraded to Navionics basemaps). Make sure you backup your waypoints - I pull off the unit and save to a SD card (not AC SD card).

Read this thread thru...around post #23

So I paid 149 for the card in a box. When I go to my subscriptions they want another 149 to renew. What's up with that. I thought buying the card would be the subscription.

Lets go over your purchase of the SD card in the box. When - what date roughly and is it a NVUS006R? Buying the card and registering it with Active Captain or buying a subscription online will get you a 1-year subscription. I bought my US South as a SD card and renewed my subscription last April. My US North subscription was purchased on Garmin web site. I bought another chart using Apple iPhone subscription but will never do that again - I don't recommend this way.

After a year your subscription expires and you can still use the subscription but not get updates. I haven't tried this but this is what Garmin says.

So I assume you bought the card over a year ago and it expired June 23? If that is true then that is why they are trying to renew you. You don't need to renew. You should be able to see your expired subscription in Active Captain as I outlined above. Also you should be able to load shaded relief maps as outlined above.

Garmin does confuse things with their Map subscriptions. They confuse things also because they have so many sites....Garmin.com, activecaptain.garmin.com, explore.garmin.com

You probably had a built-in Map and that might be also asking you to renew/update...even though you bought an upgraded Map.
They sell an SD card or a download. You had to register the card with ActiveCaptain.
As said, you don't have to renew. I "think" if your first plan expired and you never downloaded Releif Shading, you might have to renew to get it.

Once its in the App and on the MFD, you can continue using what you have without renewal. You just don't get updates.

My brother is going thru this with his "South" navionics+. He said there hasn't been anything new in the relief shading and the renewal is more than the current sale price for new???
He's going to let it go a year.

There was a thread that hookup and I were in regarding the troubles getting Maps and relief shading to show up. It seems it takes a long while. You have to get the app on the phone, have enough memory availabe for app to download maps and shading over home wifi. Choose only the area you can fish. No point downloading something over 100 miles away
Then the mfd downloads stuff from app on phone over Garmin wifi. I thought mine wasn't working and then one day there it was...

I have "north" navionics+ and the NJ relief shading is better than excellent and I do see new things sometimes.

I will try to clarify. Had Navionics + subscription which expired in 2023. Never renewed the subscription as charts were fine for me. The other dat went fishing with a buddy that had the Navionics+ Vision and was impressed with the relief shading for bottom fishing. So go to WM as I had a gift card and bought the Navionics + Vision micro SD card for 149. Thought it would be plug and play. I do have an active Garmin Express account. I do have an active Active Captain account. Not sure what procedure is from here.

Garmin web site:

Expired Garmin Navionics+ Subscriptions

When a Garmin Navionics+ subscription expires, nothing stops working, including features already downloaded. The only change that occurs is updates are no longer processed and new areas/features cannot be downloaded.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It looks like "new areas/features cannot be downloaded" so he may not be able to download shaded relief charts now. Renewal price should be around $150. I would not renew using Active Captain app. Go to Garmin.com and login. User>Account>Manage Your Data>View your data>View your subscriptions. I got jerked around and a higher price on Apple Active Captain subscription renewal. Apple wouldn't give me Garmin's price and wouldn't cancel the subscription. I reported it to the bank and Apple fought it. I called Garmin and although sympathetic said they couldn't do anything about it. In the end I never got the correct price. Garmin frequently has maps on sale on their site. Some of the discounters like Hodges have good prices too.

West sells four versions of US006R SD card but only one of them will work. Make sure they sold you the correct one. Should have been $249.99. Amazon has the SD card for $133.13. My West Marine will price match Amazon.

Let's be exact. You bought a Garmin Navionics Vision+ NVUS006R SD card version a few weeks ago - correct?

Go to Garmin.com and login. User>Account>Manage Your Data>View your data>View your subscriptions. You should see your subscriptions. Tell me what the chart codes are. Does your new NVUS006R subscription show up?

This is how you register the new NVUS006R SD card with Garmin...

Once registered the VUS006R subscription will show up in your Garmin.com account and in Active Captain>Charts>My Charts.

First thanks for the help. Yes I purchased the vus006r. Is it the correct one of the 4 I have no idea and most likely WM will not either. That said things may be a problem on the hardware side. First my Garmin has lost the Navionics charts that I bought after I purchased the plotter. That subscription expired in july 2023, but I should still have the charts which came with the purchase. I just noticed that my plotter has reverted to the free blue chart g3 (i have not used the boat for 4 months). The micro sd card does not click into the slot at first I thought the small door held it in but obviously not the case. Lastly the local wifi connection is hit or miss. Sometimes my phone pairs, sometimes says not device found. The unit is 3 years old and best I can tell it was working fine when last used in August. So based on the video above, my hardware is not working like that at all.

I'm convinced you got the wrong card. You should have purchased the NVUS006R not a vus006r. The price you paid West Marine isn't for the NVUS006R - should have been $249.99. If you could put a photo up of the codes on the box and maybe the SD card. This is the card you should have bought at West Marine. West doesn't have it labeled correctly but Hodges and West have the same product code 010-C1290-00 in the listing.

Which Garmin unit do you have? Is it compatible with Garmin Navionics Vision+ card?

A three year old unit should not be a problem. My 8612 and 8610 are older than that. If things are still flakey I would recommend getting software updated with Active Captain and possibly resetting the unit.

Backup your waypoints to a SD.
Consider doing a factory reset on your unit. The only pain with doing the reset is it require you configure all the unit settings again.
Format the Active Captain card.
Setup your unit again with Active Captain. It will setup the Active Captain SD card.
Check your software level and update it.
Setup the VUS006R SD card.
Reinstall your waypoints.

That problem you have getting the SD card in and out - I have that too on occasion. There is a spring loaded mechanism that needs a little extra help. I find that pressing it in with a wide flat blade screwdriver helps to eject it. I wouldn't try to pull it out - you may break it - push in all the way and see if it pops out.

of course in my haste i omitted the n. i cannot get a card to click into the sd slot on the unit. i agree 3 years is not old and should still work. i was able to get a card to stay by jamming with the screwdriver and pushing over to catch on the edge of the slot. it does not read the 149$ card at all. all it wants me to do is make an active captain card. there has to be something wrong with the unit. i am returning the card and regrouping.

You should get the unit up and going on the newest software update. There were a lot of updates in 3 years.
You need an Active Captain card and you have to setup both the connection to your home wifi to get updates onto the phone and the garmin wifi on your mfd to get the updates off your phone.
There will be updates to your mfd(s) and to other Garmin devices (AP, radar, GPS...) The system has to be up in your boat for everything to update.

After that, then deal with MAPS.

$149 was a good price for that....

Can you test it in a computer sd card slot? see if it boots and what files are on it

That is the correct card. I see it's in an SD adapter with micro-SD inside. What is your unit model? Do you have 2 micro-SD card slots?

You need to get that SD card reader to work.

As SkunkBoat said you should start with getting Active Captain working. Format the old Active Captain card and set it up. Update the device software.

I gave up WM was nice enough to take it back and offered another card to replace. I declined and took the money. My concern is the card slot does not hold a card 99% of time. I have also lost my previous subscription of Navionics charts and am now using the blue charts which come with the unit. Something is not right. It is a uhd 94sv with a gt 54 tranducer. I may put it on my Carolina skiff and upgrade the Grady. I have to trundle mount and only have room for a 9in unit, any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks again

The 94sv is a low end unit. Ask what unit your fishing buddy has. There are lots of mounting options - you have to stretch a little. For a 30' Marlin I would consider a 8612xsv or 1243xsv. With this shaded relief a larger screen with more resolution is better. The 943xsv is a smaller screen but same resolution as the 1243xsv. This is a good value MFD.

Active Captain is a very useful tool and the future of Garmin. If you are going to buy Garmin marine products you need to get comfortable with it and use it. Not difficult but can be confusing at times. Key is to understand what "magic" it is doing. Really does work well.

If you dive back in to upgrade just ask!

Where in FL are you?

The 94sv only has one microSD card slot. To use Active Captain you need to setup a Active Captain SD card. To register the maps you need to install the SD card. My unit has two SD card slots. I'm not sure you can take the AC SD card out and register the maps! Probably the best answer would be to get a digital subscription for NVUS006R on Garmin.com and install with Active Captain.

If that unit doesn't have a working SD card slot it can't be updated via SD card and won't run Active Captain to do the software update.

Screen resolution for 94sv is 800x600. 943 unit is 1280x720. 8610 unit is 1920x1200.

Good luck with your search.
