Well, I am trying to get my very first boat ready for fishing.. Replaced one of the batteries and now I am not getting any power to turn over the motor? 99 Yamaha..

I am getting power to my lights and bilge pumps, but no power to my trim tabs, motor, and motor will not trim up and down.. Any ideas? I am guessing a wire with some corrosion got broke while installing the new battery?? Anything else that could have happen when disconnecting the battery? Why would the trim tabs and motor not get power but lights and bilge pump do, they should be on different wiring, right? Speacially since the Trim tables were just added in 05..

There is also a little box next to my dual battery switch, with a red button that reads 40 on it? What is this? Some type of breaker reset?

Thanks for helping this newbie out!

on the motor there is an inline fuse holder check that. sometimes they blow this will cut power to motor. it is probably on the stbd side of motor under the plastic cover where the solenoids are.

Make sure that you reconnected ALL the cables to the battery. Been there, done that

Well had my buddy come look at it and we found the issue.. I dont think you guys will ever believe this one..

When we tested the motor out the day before buying, it ran great.. But we had to jump the batterys because it had been sitting so long.. When we were done messing with the boat and decided we would be back to buy it, we forgot to trim the motor back up..

Well we went back and the owner had the motor up.. Asked the owner if he jumped it again to trim it back up and he said he couldnt so he just lifted it manually..

So here is my thoery.. He tried to jump it and hooked the terminals up wrong and blow the power fuse on the motor.. So yes the main 80a power fuse was blown on the motor. I think to myself now, why else would he manually lift the motor if he could just trim it up.. any other ideas why the main fuse on the motor would blow?

Now I need to order a new one and couple spares? Any one got a good place to order one online for a 99 Yamaha OX66 225 80a fuse?

Reversing the jumper leads is very dangerous and may have done more damage to the motor besides the motor fuse and battery, wouldn't trust the battery any longer, may have even cracked open.

If it was jumped wrong, I would expect to see some arcing evidence or molten metal about the terminals.

Does the motor start and run with a new fuse ?

If you get the motor to start and run, measure the voltage at the battery terminal with a digital voltmeter / multimeter while running to verify motor charge is working.

Voltage should be higher when the motor is running than when motor is then turned off. Do this with no other assessories turned on, just the motor running or off.

Good luck.

I am almost certain on my last boat with 2000 250 Yamaha EFI there was also a large fuse inside the starboard plastic, I guess it was aslo 80 amps. I never has to replace it, but I am also almost certain there was a spare fuse inside the cover, perhaps taped to the inside of the cover?

If you do need a new fuse or any other Yamaha part, I also strongly recommend Andy at SIM. His prices are reasonable, he ships fast and his help is priceless. He has helped me many times over the years with simple problems and orders to figuring out a problem with my central buss system on my current boat.
