I have a 14 foot boat with a 4 stroke yamaha 40 - I just log my hours on a note book,

When I see a grady for sale, say a 28 marlin with twin 250's with 500 hours - does this boat have an actual hour meter, like a car odometer, or is this just the hours being reported by the owner/seller?

thx!

Newer Grady's have an hourmeter built into the Tach that tells how many hours the boat has been run.

Additionally, HPDI and 4 stroke engines have a CPU that can be connected via computer to Yamaha's diagnostic software. The printout will show how many hours the engine has been run, and for how long at various RPM levels 0-1000, 1000-2000, etc...

Not sure what year you're looking at but my '94 has a hour meter that works (at least for the couple of years I've run the boat). So "newer" isn't really that "new".

Is the Yamaha diagnostic software available for purchase by the general public?

Just be sure the CPU has not been changed out for some reason. The hours could be more. Don't ask me how I know.

ovidgsd - no Yamaha here - still have the original Johnson Ocean Pro. Can't say for sure that the hour meter is original to the boat (2nd owner), but it sure looks like it is, and the accumulated hours make sense for the year.
