Hi guys, I have a 2013 Yammy F200 I4 on my 2006 adventure. Just noticed that the oil pressure drops and fluctuates on going to idle after a run, It does return to normal after idling or slow docking speed after the hesitation. Is this normal? I have never noticed it on the other four yamaha 4 strokes owned in the past. I have a little over 200 hours on the 200 and it appears to be a perfect fit for the 208. Appreciate a responce. Ok guys, Have I possibly hit on a tabu subject? Does no one out there want to talk about oil pressure? I realize it is not an exciting subject but it does keep the outboard spinning. It does not have to pertain to the F 200I4, just any 4 stroke. Spent the last two days in the sun pulling some very fat prawns up from the depths of Georgia Straight. I installed the new prawn honing device on my 208 which simplifies the search immensely. It connects to the sounder and emits an alarm when prawns are spotted between three and four hundred feet. It's completely normal. As long as you oil pressure alarm does not go off your engine is performing as it was designed.
As a matter of best practice, don't shut you engine off right away after a hard run. Let it run at a high idle speed (>1000 rpm) for a few minutes before turning it off. You should notice that the oil pressure will come up a bar or 2 when you increase the rpm. It takes a while for the oil temp to come down and the viscosity to increase to the "normal" range after a run.

Oil pressure will decrease idling after a hard run because of the change in viscosity of the oil due to temperature. Like mentioned above, after idling for awhile oil temp will decrease making it "thicker" in a sense and oil pressure should increase/ be higher.
This is also why some people say it is better to run an engine up to temp before opening it up/running it hard. This will allow oil to warm up and in a sense "flow" easier throughout the engine (on a 4 stroke anyhow).
