For you gents who are fairly serious about buying a used boat, I highly and unreservedly recommend a surveyor I met up with this week. I gotta tell you, I was impressed. It was no fly-by. This guy was on his hands and knees, laying on his back, shining his flashlight into crevices, and tapping on the hull for the better part of three hours. And for a 20-foot boat, not the Queen Mary. The price of the survey was the best money I have ever spent, as he pointed out a problem that could be resolved only if remedial action was taken immediately. Otherwise, I'd be shelling out thousands down the road for repairs to the infamous Grady transom. By the way, this was the second contact I have had with him, as he was quite beneficial in saving me from my own insurance company when someone else mishandled my old boat and it submerged.
His is certified by NAMS and a few other professional surveyor organizations, maintaining offices in Annapolis, the eastern shore of Maryland, Norfolk, and the Philly-NJ area. The surveyor is William Reynolds of Russell, Reynolds, & Donnelly. I can't say enough good things about his service - prompt, thorough, reliable, and very experienced in the biz. If any of you have any questions about Bill, please give me a call as my phone number is in my signature. Call Bill at 443-907-2429, could be the best call you ever made. For the record, this is an unsolicited recommendation.
After today, I would never even let the thought enter my mind to buy a used boat without a surveyor.
