Has anyone used a wire Plano box holder in an on-the-boat application? I am thinking of mounting one to a access are inside the cabin, behind the helm. I want to know if it will hold up with all the bouncing around. My boxes store mostly light objects like hooks/terminal tacks, soft baits, etc.

Thoughts?

I have not, but it doesn't look like that is deep enough nor sturdy enough. You MIGHT get away with it if you put some kind of bungee cord contraption across the front of the boxes. Even then, though, I think it's going to be a pain in the butt. Otherwise, just as your gut is telling you, their just going to bounce out. There's too much box sticking out with not enough support. The other thing is that coated metal still tends to rust out - I'm sure you'd get at least a few years out of it, but thin, coated wire like that doesn't do well in a salt environment. I think you'd be better off going with something more substantial and possibly plastic/starboard. It looks like that one is meant for an inside a garage or a house?

I agree that it would need a strap or bungee. There are numerous on the market. This just happened to be the one I pulled of the internet.

I'm sure there are good ones, that one looks pretty cheap.
I'd be concerned with:
- As stated, frontal retention. A couple of bungee cords would work.
- Noise from tackle. Unless closed in somehow, I'm sure the tackle would make a racket.
- Noise from the boxes on the frame. You may be able to use rubber weather stripping or the soft side of Velcro that sticks. This would also give you some friction to mitigate movement.
- Make sure the frame and your mounting configuration is strong enough for all the weight that it will support. It would really stink if all your tackle came crashing down.
A couple of points to consider:
This isn't using gravity to your advantage, IMHO it is better for tackle to be either in a cabinet or on the floor.
This is a PIA while fishing, you can't get what you need without going to the frame or you have plano boxes all over the place.

I have storage for a number of these in my boat in the cockpit area, but it is never enough. I use (2) Husky fabric tool boxes that I got from HD. This way I can store below deck when not in use, carry to/from the boat as needed and have a place to put the stuff when in use on the cockpit.

They have other options on the HD website if you want a hard box. They sold (4) packs of the Pro Latch Plano tackle storage boxes in the past for $10 as well.
For about $60 I got (2) bags and enough tackle storage boxes.
