portable propane heater

Thanks ocnslr. It looks like Lowes in NH carries them. I'll take a ride this week as the weather is already turning brisk! What summer?

Hey, nice. I need one of those too. It gets cold out here during lobster season - we usually have to come in early as it gets too cold. Well, for so-Cal anyway. When it gets down to 60 or below we freeze.

I have the Buddy Jr I purchased several years ago for camping. Works great on the boat and in other chilly/cold situations.

I have an adapter hose that lets me connect to a larger, refillable bottle such as what you have on your gas grill but I don't use that on the boat.

Check the internet - sometimes they are substantially discounted and if a local store does price matching, you can really make out.

Hi All,
New to forum. Looks like a lot of great information. Look forward to sharing whatever I can.
On the Mr. Buddy heaters, how long does a small tank of fuel last?

Most of the day fishing for stripers at the low setting. Less than half that at the high setting.

We only use high when starting the unit (as per instructions) and to take the initial chill off, then we shift to low.

Bottles are inexpensive.

Update. Purchased heater at Lowes for $89. Took it home and WOW does that thing throw some heat! The Admiral already said she will be much happier on those early morning October trips :D :D :D .

CJ, you're not going to use that heater while underway are you?

No, was thinking of something that would sit in the foot well and warm up the whole cabin and cockpit with the canvas enclosure while we're lobster hooping. Plenty of ventilation, but I would want a way to tie the thing down so it didn't go flying from a wake or something. Some of them have a tip-over auto-switch.

tip over is what I'd be worried about, along with the propane connection breakin' loose and then......???? At the dock I can see it being safe....underway??

For you Buddy users, when I had my 204C full enclosure, and was using a Coleman catalytic propane portable like this Buddy, had it on the bridge with it's back to the cabin bulkhead, if the rear drop curtain was up, the back draft while undeway used to extinquish the heater. I either had to keep the curtain down or only use it while at anchor. The former was a pain when running back and forth during drifts.

Does the Buddy stay lit in a draft or does it need to be out of the breeze?

Thanks.

We do. What's the problem?

Once is a while the safety shut-off will shut it down, but we simply restart and no problems.

I dunno....it just seems kind of risky having a lit propane stove/heater going when underway.......I use em in the garage....just a bit cautious I guess

When I got it home, I had to fire it up and tip it over to see if the auto shut off really worked and it did. I will mostly use it to defrost my glass in the morning as I can't scrape without causing any damage. My only concern would be if it were to tip forward because the grill gets rather hot. I was thinking I would place it in a milk crate and tie it to one end keeping the grill free and clear. The back, sides and bottom do not heat up. This will also keep it more stable underway but I don't think I'll keep it on if it gets rough.

Jman....I would use something other than a plastic milkcrate as they burn pretty well once they get lit....maybe make something lightweight and sturdy out of aluminum.......you wanna make sure you get back home for happy hour at Old Timers......
