I have 250' of anchor line with a plastic eye which I attach to 20' of chain using a shackle. This plastic eye is too bit to fit through the metal guides on both sides of the roller on the end of the pulpit. This is a PIA when dropping or retrieving the hook.

I know I can buy another anchor line and chain combination that is windlass friendly (I don't have a windlass obviously) but I'd rather not.

So, has anyone used a chain splice with success or failure? Any practical tips? Or am I just being too cheap? Will I constantly worry about my DIY job and ultimately end up buying something anyway?

Any thoughts or advice are appreciated.

Thanks,

Larry

Try splicing a smaller thimble into the opposite end of the line, plus it doubles the life of your line (rotate each season).

I agree with Plymouth. Either re-splice a new eye, or put one on the other end. If you don't feel you can do it well enough you can talk to a marina to see if they can, or maybe chat with the local Coast Guard or Coast Guard Auxiliary. They certainly will have someone that can do it.

I had the exact same issue. So I spliced the end of the line directly to a link, making it tight to help reduce any affects of chaffing. Goes right through the roller now. And yes, will require closer attention, inspect it more frequently, and just re-splice when/if it starts to wear.

I also attached the other end of the chain to the anchor with a hammered split-link just slightly larger than the chain links so it would fit on the anchor shank. It goes right through the roller too.
