Buddy of mine has a new boat and Yamaha motor - think it's an f225. He has about 25 hours on it now and it has started cutting out frequently. It restarts but cuts out again soon. I can't imagine he's having ethanol problems with new equipment.

Aside from the fuel/water separator, is there another filter on the Yammi engine that should be looked at/changed? Something else that might be the problem? Any help would be much appreciated. July 4th weekend will soon be here but the local mechanics can't see him for at least 2 weeks.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

I had the exact problem last week with my yamaha motor. To solve the problem I had to replace the fuel filters. Also, the fuel pump might be an issue.
I highly recommend using startron fuel additive to combat some of the damages ethanol gas causes.

Hope this helps.

Probably is filter related. Unfortunately, with this e-10 fuel, no one is spared.

There is another filter/seperator on the motor, it has a transparent housing. That filter has a "water indicator", it's simply a red O ring that floats on water, so check that out. Idealy, the O ring should be bottomed out.

Is your other filter/seperator a Racor? If not, I highly recomend getting one. They have filters and bowls for different brands, so you shouldn't have to replace the whole thing. I like the tranparent bowl models for obvious reasons, but you can drain any of them, and that's the biggest feature.

The 32013 is a filter/bowl combo. It screws right onto the Yamaha filter housing.

My thanks to everyone who replied to my post. My buddy went to a shop to pick up filters this afternoon and the service manager scared the crap out of him with talk about all these other things the problem could be and voiding the warranty. So the dude is going to sit out the next week or two until a Yamaha mechanic can look at it. I'm kind of PO'd at him for not being willing to try the filters but it's his boat and his weekends that are lost. Still...

It's under warranty, let Yamaha have it. It's not maintenance.

So when they return it fixed, they are then responsible should the crap hit the fan.

They will check the gas quality to see if is OK or not.

With a brand new rig, I don't blame him.
Did you guys inspect the filter on the motor?
I would think that changing the pre-filter to a Racor would not void any warranties, as long as they're 10 micron, which the Racor is. But, nowadays, with all the e-10 related problems, who knows.
If it turns out to ba bad fuel, I'd be curious to see how the shop handles it. Your buddy might be looking at a steep bill, considering how they have to properly dispose of gasoline. Hope that's not the case.
It's a shame about the downtime, but like you said, it's his call.

This is very good advice... with only 25hrs don't touch it... let the dealer handle it. If you knew exactly what was wrong and it was a simple fix then maybe DIY... otherwise be safe and let them do it.

Sorry... just read your last response. Your friend is doing the right thing.
