First mate tells me stripers are hot and heavy in the Atlantic Highlands. Since I trailer my boat, can any of our group recommend a ramp or marina to put in for the day? I live due west of Point Pleasant, and I would be approaching Atlantic Highlands from the south. I'd prefer to stay to the south of the Highlands. Thanks

Leonardo State Maria is my suggestion.
Leonardo State Marina
102 Concord Ave
Leonardo, NJ
Phone: 732-291-1333
It is a NJ state run marina well maintained and wide public ramp with plenty of parking for trailers. It has direct access to Raritan bay right near Atlantic Highlands. Take GSP north to exit 117 East on RT 36 to signs to Leonardo State Marina. If you try to get in south you need to try to get in on the Shresbury or Navasink river. Problem is you need to trailer through Red Bank, Rurson ect. Best bet is Leonardo and it will put you right on the fishing area and keep syou on main roads with direct shot for GSP. Also Rt 36 has a number of good Bait and tackle stores to pick up fresh bait and ice.

After this weekend I think you may want to rethink your position. The Stripers are 'in your backyard.' We caught our largest striper to date off Barnegat Inlet last Friday. I have read countless reports that the Stripers (and bunker) are here from Manesquan Inlet to LBI. I'm sure it won't last forever, but I hate to see you leave fish to find fish...

I'm confused, are you from Point Pleasant NJ or Maryland?

Just keep an eye out for low tide at Leonardo

The Leonardo ramp is fine just keep an eye out for low tide you may not be able to get your boat off/on during dead low. Also be aware that there is an end to the ramp and a drop off afterwards. Try not to backup beyond this point it can get ugly. It does have the advantage that it puts you close to the fishing in the bay. Atlantic Highlands Municipal ramp is quite large and does not have a tide issue it can however have a crowd problem on weekends. It's approximately 2 miles further east on 36...

Yeah, I'm confused until I take my morning medication, but I keep forgetting that, too. Anyway, I meant Pt. Pleasant, NJ.

Sounds to me like the Highlands may be too far north. Any suggestions where I could put in more south of the Highlands to be between LBI and Manesquan (spelling) Inlet? Sorry for the questions, but I have no idea about the marinas and ramps in that part of the world.

Striper fishing is NOT read hot in the highlands area....

I fish there 3-4 times a week and know a good number of elite charter captains and party boat captains, none are doing well with consistent action. There are a few good trips here and there but by far this is a horrible season for us up here. I have not had limits on most trips, near limits but that is unusual for my boat. I would launch further south, fish are off manasquan and barneget. I'm running on a friends boat the next two mornings for bass out of manasquan to save on gas.
Also, the ocean fishing bite is early, by 9:30am its over, if you cannot get there that early, fish in the pm, after 3pm, the fishing is usually dead in between.

As for marinas, I'd launch from the atlantic highlands, it can accommodate many boats at once and has no problems with tides, leonardo has problems with some tides and for boats over 25' there is not a ton of space when launching. I've launched many boats over the years from both and I would take the atlantic highlands any day over leonardo.

Honestly I'd save your gas and fish south a little for now. Good luck!

Are any of these public ramps?

The site tells you which ones have ramps. Most will let you launch/retrieve for a fee as long as they have enough area fro you to park the triler. A guy I workwith has a season ramp pass somewhere by Seaside. Give some a call.

Go out of Pt Plesant and head south, we CRUSHED the bass the past two days there on my buddies boat, fish from 22-30lbs all on live bunker. Bunker are close to beach maybe 15 ft of water then go fish structure in deeper water and find the marks. We found a piece holding lots of fish, best part was having top name charter boats watch us bail fish and not get into the bite :D .
