All,

Instead of upgrading to a Marlin this year the Admiral says I can get new helm seats for our Gulfstream. I really like the premium seats on the new Gradys with flip-up armrests and flip-up bolsters. I think they'll be perfect for the somewhat small and narrow helm area on our boat.

Does anyone have thoughts on how to purchase these or similar seats without taking out a mortgage? Is the Grady dealership the only route?

Thanks,

Larry

Larry:
There are plenty of helm and captain's seats on the Internet. Flip up bolsters and anything else you want. Just Google Helm seats or captains chair and there will be many options for you to choose from.
Also, Grady is usually very helpful so just ask them who the OEM supplier is for their chairs and I expect they will tell you outright.

I replaced the helm seats on a Gulfstream with a pair of Wise WD 562 ladder back helm chairs.

These generic seats are almost identical to the original seats found on older Grady's, (early 90's). Wise made the custom seats for Grady at that time. The difference is the color is pure white, (seat and cushions) as oposed to the genuine beige Grady color. That didn't bother me a bit because the deck area had faded anyway. The design, (pattern) of the cushions is slightly different too. Imo, these are a sturdy, very well made chair. The arms are fixed in place. A friend of mine replaced his seats on a Seafarer as well... worked out great.

Here's a good deal at Boaters World, buy 2 for $369 - http://www.boatersworld.com/product/167990258.htm

They do not include the slider, (or the pedestal). If you need the slider, this model works perfectly, (Wise link) - http://www.wiseseats.com/wise_marine_hard_374.html

Here's a link for the slider at Bass Pro, ($50) - http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/store ... 00_225-8-5

It does not state the model number, but it is the same one.

I put the same seats that Catch22 posted in my 228G. They work great and really improved the appearance of my cockpit/helm area. The only issue I have is they are slightly wider than the stock seats I had, which makes for even less room between them. Also, the adjustment lever sometimes touches the back of your leg while standing (which I nearly always do).

My 2 cents is to go w/ Garelick. they are more money but you get what you pay for. Superior hardware and the stitching & cushions are high quality. Even if you go w/ the Wise seats, get the garelick hardware. You will not be dissapointed. Check out the Shock absorber seats...Awesome!

I installed the same Wise chairs on my Overnighter. Look great and are much more comfortable than the original. I did take the armrests off to gain some space.

.. so just ask them who the OEM supplier is for their chairs and I expect they will tell you outright.

But DON'T tell the OEM that they're for a Grady. Almost all suppliers have contracts that preclude 'em selling Grady stuff to anyone except Grady ...

What do you have now on the Gulfstream? Are you sure the Pompanettes are narrower?

For $1500 , are you getting a mate for the companion seat, bikini included ?

I have the original Pompannette seats, which are really quite bad. The arms do not fold up and always seem to be in the way no matter how much you turn either seat. The helm seat slides back but not far enough for it to not rub the back of your legs when standing (I stand a lot when trolling offshore).

These new Pompannette are the only ones on the market that I found to solve both those problems.

Thanks
